Dana 70 posi install

Help! Truck is all over the floor. I have removed both rear shafts from the wheels, both bearing caps are off and the rear carrier doesn't pop out of the Dana 70 like I thought it would. I'm trying to install a posi before 6 am-ish. Help!

Thanks.

I don't have the Dodge manual, but my Jeep CJ manual says just to pry the differential out of the housing. I've seen guys do this with 2 prybars, 1 from top, 1 from bottom on a solid part of the carrier. May want to reinstall the bearing caps loosely so it doesn't fall on the ground. A case spreader may be required to install the new differential.

Good luck!

Well, it doesn't seem to be happening. Looks like a lot of potential for me to screw something up. Time to put it all back together and take it into the pros. Thanks.

Pry harder!

Lars, put the bearing caps back on with at least a few threads on each bolt, and pry harder. The bearing races really get stuck in the housing.

You will feel them back out of their recesses.

Good luck. Greg L

I agree, pry a little harder. Just don't pry against any machined or sensitive surfaces. Also, a piece of wood on the back side of the prybar wouldn't hurt. On my chebby, I had to use a 3 foot bar to get it out.

Good luck

I've never done this type of work, so take this with a grain of salt.

I've read in a truck mag several years back that a couple pieces of angle iron bolted across the diff cover surface and a bottle jack can serve as a case spreader. This may help you get the old carrier out as well.

Dana Carriers

Dana carriers preload the bearings by streaching the housing, there should be about . 015" preload on the bearings. As long as the axles are out of the way you can pry the carrier out of the housing

but before you do measure the backlash so that you

set the backlash the same when you put it back together so that you are on the same wear pattern.

You can also turn the carrier out by turning the pinion gear. You may need to block the carrier from turning, but usually not. Be careful so you don't exert much tension when the gear teeth are almost out of mesh or you could chip one.

When it's time to reinstall, you need to determine the number of shims for zero preload with the new carrier, and then add 0. 005" or 0. 010" to give some preload. You can tap the races into place back and forth to keep the carrier going in straight. You can use the butt end of a wooden handled hammer. To get the zero amount of shims you need a set of trial bearings for convenience because you also need to distribute the shims to the 2 sides for proper backlash. You can have a shop hone out the ID of a set of carrier bearings so they will slip on.

I wrote more about this stuff in TDR#24.

If you are installing a different carrier you need to determine the amount of shims to necessary to get zero preload without the ring gear bolted to the carrier. Once this is done you install the ring gear and determine the amount of shims necessary to get to zero backlash this will tell you where you need to divide the shims that you needed to get zero preload. The next step is to add . 015" to the ring gear side of the differential to give you the recommended preload and backlash. In order to get the backlash back to what you had when you took it apart you will probably have to take the bearings on and off a couple of times.

Speedo, sounds like work! I didn't have enough time to do the whole project or actually any of it. Never could get that carrier out, so I put it all back together and will take it to the guys at Northern 4x4 Suppliers.

Did you and all the other AK Bombers meet?

Thanks to all for your input.
