Howdy ya'll,

I posted this in the 2nd gen forum but no replies yet. I figure the 1st and 2nd gen D70 is essentially the same.

I was replacing the pinion seal in my cousin's 2000 CTD with AT, but just got as far a removing the driveshaft, the pinion has major play. Looks like a new seal would not hold. I would like to rebuild it, but do not know if I can get by without the case spreader and all the other specialized tools in the FSM

I have rebuilt bigger stuff, like Eaton and Rockwell third members  but have yet to build one like this. I have dial indicators and micrometers etc... , but what else will I need?

Thanks, Steven

in/lb torque wrench for pinion preload, ft/lb for bearing caps and ring gear bolts.

Don't need a case spreader, though it does make it easier.

Steven,

Can't help with the Dana, but it's good to hear from you. You'd been so quiet, I thought about driving down to see if you were trapped under an engine! :-laf

No idea about the miles or service that the 70 has seen but I would inspect the carrier bearings before making a decision to rebuild. Pull the cover and check for bearing failure. The carrier bearing on the ring gear side of the carrier will be the first to go. If there is no metal and no side play in the carrier, pull the carrier out. If the left side brg is showing wear in the housing or deterioration of the race surface, there will be microscopic damage to all the bearings. Pull them all and replace with the shims as original.

Without the spreader, you won't get as good a setup as if you have the spreader. It is really the only way to set up the preload with certainty. If the carrier bearings are good and the front pinion bearing is good, replace the front pinion bearing and crush sleeve and put it back together with the same stuff as you disassembled.

This is not a rebuild but is sometimes all that is required. But you really have to evaluate what is there before making a decision.

I knew you guys would come through Oo. :D

Torque wrenches- couldn't live without 'em

Yep, Phil; under a Cummins would most definitely be the first place to look for me :-laf. I have been pretty busy, been getting ready for the 2006 Mid-America Trucking Show Oo. Oo. Can't wait till the next get-together.

This axle has about 290,000 miles on it, do not know the life of it before about 6 months ago. My cousin did have to drive it from Ohio with the pinion seal leaking  I think he said he used about a gallon of gear oil  . Not Good.

Thanks alot guys,

Steven

a gallon of gear oil. Not Good.

I agree but not a definite killer. The 300k miles would indicate that it is time to check in on the condition of that ring gear side bearing. Also inspect the cap for erosion on that side. I have seen comments about using bearing mount epoxy to 'repair' damage on the cap. There is also a tool advertised to repair damage to the housing. I have not done either so can't comment on the effectivness of those.

Tell us what you see.

James
