I think the problem is too many people tax the equipment too much , just because it will move it dont mean its safe to tow it or haul it , renember there "pickups" not class 8 trucks

The only thing making me a little hesitant, is that I just put so much time into the D70, upgrading the hubs to accept 9/16" lugs, etc. Can I re-use my same D70 drums and hubs on the D80 hybrid?

Eric:

I have no direct experience, but have read that the D80s came with 13" drums (as opposed to the 12" x 3" drums that are OEM on our First Gens). Actually, I've also read that "increased braking" is one of the primary reasons to upgrade to the D80.

From '94 to '01 the D70 used the same sized brakes as the D80 for any given 2500 model year. The early models used 13"x2. 5" with the later ones 12. 13"x3. 5". A good mod for "increased braking" is to use larger wheel cylinders.
