I bought a Power-Loc from Rieder Racing for my 2001. 5, 4x4, HO. It is the D70-HD carrier with the bolt holes drilled out. Normally, when you replace the carrier it is just a swap. The sizes are very close and you just need to transfer the shims to get very close to the right setting.



In this rear end, the new carrier is about 1/4 wider than the old one. The axle has some 1/4" spacers at the end of the bearings, under the bearing caps. I've heard these called 'thrust wear spacers'. These are to prevent the bearings (when they spin) from wearing the case.



Question: can I just find 1/8" spacers to replace these old 1/4" spacers? Or, do i just throw them out and add 1/8" shims under the bearings on the carrier? Where can I find part numbers for these?
 
Dave, How come they had to send a D70HD unit? My d80 has a factory limited slip, and most of those are the Power-Loc I believe (4-pinion or spider or whatever).



There is a D80 Power Lok on ebay right now. That guy always has them and it says he has them for any gear ratio.



I would be interested in buying your open D80 carrier if it will work with 3. 54 gears and you would like to sell it.
 
If I remember right you have to machine the carrier to make the difference so the caps hold the bearing races in the correct spot. 80s use Trac Lok lsd I havent seen a Power Lok for one yet.
 
Reider Racing machines these D70-HD carriers to fit the D80 (hybrid). They only open up the D70 1/2 bolt to the D80's 5/8 bolt. Our D80 hybrid's have smaller axle shafts like the D70.



The D80's have a Trac-Loc standard, the Power-Loc is much tougher with the 4 pinions and a better case.



Others on this list have done this swap, so I thought I'd try it. I'm tired of spinning one wheel on wet pavement, even in 5th gear.



Anyone have experience with what Dana/Spicer calls a 'outboard Diff spacer'?

I looked up parts for the old 1998 down Dodge D80 and there is a Spacer kit.

I looked up parts for Furd D80 and there is a Spacer kit and available seperately, but they wouldn't be thin enough, only down to 0. 180.



I can only assume that I should make up the 0. 125" by placing shims under the bearings and throw away the Outboard Diff Spacers.

The trac loc used in the D80 is a 4 pinion... at least my dad's 99 has one. There are TWO traclocs used in the D80 in the dodge application.



You can also stack the clutches in a D80 tracloc so it essentially won't slip (you don't need to do anything special). The dodge D80 traclocs have the clutches stacked out of order, if you reorder them, they are much more aggressive.



My dad's tracloc is more aggressive with the USED clutches restacked than my D70 power-loc ever was... and it currently has the original clutches (restacked) with 280k on the unit.



The D80 tracloc is nothing to simply blow off... it is more like a powerloc than other traclocs. It might be worthwhile looking into.
