Competition Spline count on Dana 60

I am in the process of building a Dana 80 to swap in place of the D70 in my 02 now. I plan on sled pulling more as time goes on. I am keeping the Factory trac lock limited slip carrier and doing a restack of the clutches to tighten it up to save cost for now.

I am wondering what hp level the stock 35 spline axles are good for?

I have been researching 37 spline axles but have found That unless I get an ARB or Detroit locker in 37 spline the only other option is 37 spline side gears for an open carrier that gets welded. My only choice would be an ARB but not sure if they have an E-locker in D80. Not real enthused about all the extra stuff and $$$$ needed for air lockers.

I have found a Yukon 37 spline spider Kit part # YPKD80-P/L-35_R at Randys R&P for the trac lock also but have read lots of stories of poor quality and lack of strength with Yukon products.

So my only 2 options are run stock axles and side gears until failure and chance other damage along with it.

Or spend 1300 now and Get the Yukon spider kit and 37 spline Scheid diesel axles which I have read seem to be about the best. I was in contact with Brad Ingram at scheids yesterday and he is going to see if I have other options for a spider kit for the trac lock.

What are your thoughts?

By the way I like to pull on the conservative side. I like the less agressive tires and prefer tire speed to try to avoid wheel hop. It has worked for me so far, in 3 pull I have 3 wins. That was when I was 150 hp less than what I'm at now.

Well due to a shortage of time and $$$ for the short term Due to me getting an II HRVP44 last week I decided to just go back together with the stock axles and spiders with a new restacked clutch pack and run this until I explode something and force myself into the upgraded axles and spiders.

600HP on a tight track can present some axle shaft problems.
If your talking to Randy's see if they have a 37 Spline axle with the Dodge flange bolt pattern.

Definately don't sell yourself short in the axle dept. I would not waste your money on the Yukon axles as I too have heard they are not the best. I actually just bought a pair of Schied 37 spline axles and am now in the search for a carrier. You'll break the spider gears before the stock 35 spline shafts go. I blew up my stock spiders on the last pull of my season last year and thank god that was the only extent of the damage.

You can find welded carriers from Diesel Performance Parts Power Chips Diesel Exhaust Intake Performance Products or you can go with the Detroit or ARB. Haisley Machine is now making spools for the 80 but they are VERY pricey since they are custom made by Haisley. Not too many options out there for positive traction devices that will hold up to the abuse of pulling.

It is a toss up about spiders or axles being the week link. Some of the posi units hold up pretty well, I know two guys who went through numerous axles and kept the same carrier. My posi broke the first hook on it. I have ran an ARB with zero issues out of it and have the haisley 35 spline axles.

I am having the driveline shop build me a 1 piece driveline with 1480 yokes in . 180 tubing.

The question I have is does anyone make a slipyoke for the tailshaft of a DHD241 tranfercase in 1480? The driveline shop is looking into it to see in AAM makes such a beast. I know if I had a 271 Transfer case I could get one but looking into it for a 241. When I destroy the 241 then I will upgrade to the 271.
