So I was at the pulls last weekend and tried to pull in "Stupid High Gear" for my power on a very tight clay track. Right now it appears I have broken spiders and one of the side shims broke allowing the speedometer gear to contact the pick-up.

Ring gear looks pretty good after 175,000 miles on Royal Purple

Because of the broken shim it popped right out as soon as I dropped the swap bar, do I need a spreader to properly put it back together? Are the shims a standard size?

A rebuild kit is $218 and contains gears and maybe some bearings and and a clutch pack for the posi. Anyone got some spare parts so I can just get it going until I can get a Detroit Locker? Anyone have a spare factory posi unit?

nope we got a few complete 70 not an 80 tho:{ Sorry to hear TT1 hopefully someone will be along to answer your questions shortly;)

I wonder if the spiders are different between the 70 and 80. Thanks Warpig, I'll post over there just to see if anyone has parts in their garage.

I broke the spider gears and the Cross section last night in my Dana 80

Overnighted spiders from randys would be well over $100. 00 plus 3 something for the install kit, clutches and spiders.

Well I have a pull to be at on sat. and another on sunday so no time to wait for the gears till the afternoon and no money to overnight them:-laf

So what do you do?? MAKE YOUR OWN SPOOL!!!!!:-laf

First throw out the clutch packs and replace them with a piece of machined round stock(same thickness)

Then the spider gear with the race

Heck mine has 175,000 miles on it and has never been apart, I think I did pretty good, probably would've gotten many more miles if not for the truck pulls. ;)

It's a good idea to open these rearends up and put new clutches in them from time to time.
You never know how good or bad they are till you take a look at them.
My rearend had 200k + miles on it and the clutches were so worn that the only thing left were the tabs on some of them.
But, I just bought a rear with, according to the second owner, ALOT more on it.
The rear had never been opened, the clutches were still in VERY good shape.
I still rebuilt the clutch pack.
It's cheap insurance and really doesn't take very long.

BTW the 70 and 80 Spiders won't swap... the axle splines are different, if nothing else.

Sorry to change subjects, but on my Dana 80 I only get traction it seems from one side. Can the rear axle be changed to more of a posi or limited slip? I am ignorant to rear axles. Any help you all have while fixing this would be appreciated.

MAllen, You should probably pull the center section and rebuild the clutch pack, not really a bad job.

There is a post about the "performance stack" of clutches on here.

Clutches aren't too terribly expensive and if you don't know the condition, ignoring them can be catastrophic.

As they wear they pull the spider gears farther away from the axle gears reducing the contact surface.

After restacking you can chose to only add the amount of limited slip additive you want.

The less additive the less it slips.

I blew mine 80 up just like the other guys... so I bought a Detroit. Its a lot more fun and I dont have to worry about it breaking now!

I'm now in the carnage group, after Houston this weekend, does anyone know a good place to get a Detroit locker? $? Is this the best fix?

Jared

I would go with either a Detroit locker or an ARB. It is my understanding though that if you break an axle with a Detroit that it pretty much can ruin the detroit also.

Thanks to DCreed I have my new axle in my truck but not road worthy yet, I have found that the E-brake cables are different from the 99 to the 01 infact the brakes are completely different. I still have to take some measurements but I think the brakes are bigger on the 99 differential.

The only problems I ran into while swapping them out was 1 shock bolt on my truck still isn't out, I might have to poke some heat to it and, where the rubber brake line ties into the metal one on the truck I had to cut it because of some rust so I need to replace that line which of course runs behind the fuel tank and I am sure there is a clamp back there that I'll need to remove.

I also had some new u-bolts made up because my originals were looking kind of bad.

Well I have 3. 54 gears and there isn't a Detroit Locker for it I hear, what is the next best thing? Iwas told the factory LS is really strong if the clutch packs are good and there's no play in them. Where is there a good rebuild kit for the fact. LS and a good price?
