I have an 01' 3500 dually it has a Dana 80 with 3.55 ratio rear end. with abs. disk brakes... The truck was in a wreck by previous owner.. The right axle tube is slipped out 3/4 to a inch out.and fluid ran out. And drove by previous owner...I've been searching for 3-4 months for a replacement.. They range from $2600 to $3500. And no one will rebuild mine for any less.. So my question is I have found on Craigslist a 97' dually rear 3.55 ratio..with drum brakes. no abs..for $700..that's all know. Don't know if it's a 70 or 80... haven't called yet..If I use the brake parts from my rear...will it be a simple conversion or just a big waste of time. That's assuming it's a Dana 80.. If anyone could help..it would be greatly appreciated.. thanks

Your 2001.5 will have a tone ring mounted to the ring gear carrier and a speed pickup going through the 3rd member housing. This is how it senses rear wheel speed for the speedometer and ABS. Does the 97 axle have that, and if it does, does it have the same number of teeth on the tone ring? That's the first hurdle that comes to mind....

I'd keep looking. Find a couple junk yards in the area and take a look, or peruse the online junk yards that can either ship or put you in touch with a local one. I'd be really surprised if you couldn't find one for between $500-$1,000 complete.

It's amazing the axle tube slipped out. I'd like to see a pic of that. I've seen spun axle tubes on axles, and bent tubes, but never seen one where part of the tube came out.

Mingoglia: here is a pic as you can see it's slipped out far enough to insert a pencil.. And may be able to see the upward deflection of the tube...also rusty thanks for the info on the abs tone ring...I'll will check into it

Assuming the rear wasn't converted to duals later, it should be an 80. So if it has an ABS sensor, you're off to a good start. Then I guess you need the tooth count for the ABS. A pre-'01.5 rear will have drums, so you'll need to swap brakes. The prices you're finding seem crazy, but since it's a pretty rare piece, maybe that's how it's gonna be. Or maybe you'll find someone who doesn't think their parts are solid gold...

Good luck!

Something else to remember the rear housing weather it's a 70 or 80
is not necessarily the same width even though there both set up for duals.
The housing for a dual wheel cab & chassis is narrower than one for a pickup.

I think I would drill out the faulty plug welds push the tube back in place and re-weld.
Unless it's to badly bent?

Go to eBay and look up RedLinear, he carries nothing but Dodge parts, there is also a guy in Palestine, Tx on Craigslist that carries Dodge parts
