Hey

I got a question for one of you whizz bang rear end guys.

Read some where that the 2wd diff holds 6. 8pints and the 4wd diff holds 10. 1. Why the difference ? And any chance a 2wd truck could have a 4wd diff from factory? Trying to find out why I am having to change axle seals about every 10k. Also burned up

right side bearings.

Any Ideas out there ?

Thanks

Scott

I remember reading awhile back that one of the diffs has a low fluid level because the factory plug location is to low. When I changed fluid in my 80, I made sure that the plug was on the uphill side and fluid ran out the hole before the plug was put back in - Haven't noticed any problems yet.

Per the service manual everything looks the same between the 4x4 and the 4x2 except the amount of lube they hold?? You should go to a good shop that specializes in rearends. You problem is not normal.

I think the difference is that the diff. covers have the fill plug located in different positions from 2WD and 4WD axles.

The 4X4 needs more fluid capacity due to the likely hood of off camber situations while the truck is off-road ( don't want all the fluid running down one axle tube and starving the R/P for oil ) .

It would seem to me that if the pinion angle on a 4X4 was turned up more than it would hold less gear oil than if the pinion is at the correct degree angle.

I'll bet you could drill and thread a new fill plug hole in your cover ( or buy four wheel drive cover ) and take advantage of more fluid capacity. Did you burn up more than one set of bearings or was it just the one time?

So far just one set of bearings in the right side.

But to repair it they had to do some grinding, hope it does not cause problems down the road. I have about 25k miles on that repair. I have been going round and round Dodge about rear axle seals, they say there is no problem. Did a search here and got about 20 pages worth. Sounds like a problem to me.

Thanks Again All
