on my 94 12 valve reg cab the dana 80 in the rear when you coast it scrapes on the diff cover. when you get on throttle it stops... i am believing it is carrier bearings... . i have th bearings but it is a complete pita to change them so what do you think?#@$%!

Man, if it is actually scraping the cover, your pinon is really moving and you are looking at a complete rebuild now before you have to call a wrecker.

I don't think the pinion could move back far enough to hit the cover, the ring gear, doubtful. If it is just a terrible noise when coasting down in gear it is probably the rear pinion bearing as it would be under load in that situation. bg

the noise isnt even that loud. . no vibration or hanging up. . jus the scratching noise. . we removed the cover the other day and the abs ring and gear was scraping the inside of the cover. . i called dana themselves and guy said right away it was carrier bearings but i fig id ask on here also. the noise and scraping on the cover only happens when you are above 20 mph coasting... once you apply throttle it stops.

Seems a little strange to me as the pinion would be pushing the ring gear toward the rear on acceleration and you would think it would be pulling it forward on decelleration????? If the carrier bearings are so loose as to allow the tone ring to hit the cover I would have thought it would make a noise at all times?? bg

If the ring gear is touching the cover, what is your question? It is obviously gunny sacked. Fix it.

if its touching the diff cover... im wondering if its the carrier bearings that are shot... i have snow coming tonight so i dont have the time or resourses to rebuild the whole rearend before snow fall. i have the carrier bearings in my garage. . just seeing what other ppls input is.

Had to rebuild two of mine over the years. If you replace the carrier bearings then you should remove the pinion and at least clean the housing or even replace the pinion bearings also. The metal shavings from the tone ring hitting the cover had to of traveled thru the whole housing and will ultimately destroy the pinion bearings also. Both of my rebuilds were for bad pinion bearings. Do it right and you will only have to do it once... .

well im about to go pull cover off at somepoint today... i have carrier bearings but havent been able to get everything to rebuild i am going to pull cover and check the bearings if they are def shot i will have to replace just those for now as it is snowing and i have plow accounts. this woulda been done before now but NAPA has crappy parts... story behind that is... yesterday morning (even tho rearend was still in question, i needed the truck as we had 8 inchs of snow to be pushed) was driving from one account to the next when all of a sudden the truck started vibrating and clanking (thinking the rearend let go i pulled over to confirm that) as i pulled over i got out and smelled transmission fluid so i took peek under the truck and there was transmission fluid ******* out... everywhere. . so i tow truck home now thinking transmission? tcase?? NIETHER! as of couple days ago i rebuild front driveshaft with all new NAPA ujoints... well one let go and sent the front driveshaft on a frenzy... long story short i just got truck running this morning without ******* atf everywhere after getting all parts for FREE from NAPA for the repairs. the ujoint broke which sent driveshaft on frenzy which took out 2 transmission lines and fitting on the side of transmission and the ujoint itself. so truck is up and running and its snowing again so i have some plowing to do then i will be tackling the rearend. should know tonight or tomr what the real problem is that is making the ring gear scratch the cover. but after what happened yesterday this will be a walk in the park lol thanks for all input on this and i will besure to write what i find.
