I recently noticed that I seemed to have excessive play in the rear differential yoke on my '97(with 97k miles on it). If you shift it just right, you can hear a clunk in the drive train. So, I pulled the rear diff cover off and took a look inside. The ring and pinion gear look great, backlash is . 007", and the oil looked good. My excessive play seems to be coming from the side gears in the Trac-lok carrier. If you put the parking brake on and move the pinion yoke, you can see the side gears moving slightly back and forth, and there also appears to be a little slop between the side gears and axle shafts. I pulled out the axles, and took a look at them. The splines on the axles look fine with no detectable wear. I was just wondering if anybody else has ever seen this, and if so, what parts are usually worn. Without tearing into it further(I'd rather wait till I had the parts so the truck isn't down), I'm thinking that either the splines are worn on both the outside(clutch disc), and inside(axle) of the side gears. Or maybe the teeth on the discs are worn down where they mate with the side gears? At any rate, who would be the best source to get the parts from? I'll probably end up putting in two new side gears and clutch packs. I'll also change bearings and the pinion seal. I have the carrier bearings already, but need P/N's for the pinion bearings if anybody has them. Thanks in advance.
