It's time to replace upper & lower ball joints and steering u-joints on my Dana front axle. The manual tells me that it could be a model 60 or 44. The manual shows both front covers to help identify the 60 from the 44, although, mine has features of both diagrams, leaving me wondering which it really is. How do I positively identify this axle? The truck is a 95.

Thanks for any help!

Like said before all cummin's trucks came with the D60. But there should be a metal tag on the inspection cover that will tell you for sure.

ata is right. There's a six digit number on the tag. On the dana 60's it starts with a 6, for example, mine is a 610828. That number will also help out the parts man in getting the right parts for your front axle too.

The 610828 number is Dana's assembly number (bill of material number). If it is a front axle it starts with a 61 if it is a rear axle it starts with a 60. It doesnt matter if it is a Model 44, 50, 60, 70, 80 or any other axle Dana makes they all start with a 61 or a 60.
