This past weekend I changed the fluid in the differential. The first thing that I noticed was that the fill plug did not have a magnet in it. The plug was a recessed type with 3/8 square hole. Very similar to the plug on the 2000 truck that I had with the Dana model 80. The next day I stopped at the local Dodge dealer parts department to order a magnetized plug. The fill plug they had in stock was completely different than my OEM plug. It was much larger , non-magnetized and had a external rectangular head - not recessed at all.
Since this was not the plug that was on my truck and was not packaged nor did it have a part number on it, I was skeptical that this was the right plug. I had the parts person order a new plug for me. The next day the new plug came in; it was in the proper packaging with the part number on it ( package only). The plug was exactly the same as the one the parts dept. had in stock. This new plug is much beefier than the OEM plug that was on my truck.
I guess that I will forgo the magnet and wait until I buy a Mag Hy-Tec cover. I wonder why DC changed the plug design. I guess the new design is cheaper; especially without the magnet.
