I was outside earlier and noticed a rubber line hanging down to the ground close to the rear diff on my truck. Crawled under there and it appears to originate from the top of the axle tube on the drivers side and has a couple of metal clips on the hose. I have no clue where this used to be attached on the other end or if it is a vent of some sort? Any help?

I haven't driven the truck anymore since noticing but I saw the clips on the hose. That being said, there is nothing on the end of the tube so the vent may have succumbed to the asphalt. Replace it? Don't worry about it? I would think as long as I can tie/clip it up where the opening is facing downwards, I'd be good?

It is best to get it as high as possible. When driving the axle and oil heat up and vent pressure but if you go in water as high as the axle the axle can cool quickly which creates a vacuum that can suck water in to hose or past axle seals if there is no vent to air.

This same exact thing happened to mine. Replace the vent. It's only $5 at the dealer, or was a few years back. Part number J5352955 for my 04 truck.

Unsure of the nomenclature in the current part catalog. I got the part number from my 2004 part catalog (it's the same for both axles) and ordered the part from the dealer. Here is the image of the page showing the diagram and part number. If you cannot read the image, I have attached the page in PDF too. Hope this helps.

Gotcha! I've got it tie wrapped up out of the way at the moment, gonna have to drop the spare to get the clips back where they came from. I'll do that when I can get one of the vents in hand. Thanks for the pic!
