I finally put my Mag. cover on today and my question is,what color was your diff. oil when you changed it for the first time?
My 01 ETH just hit 5K miles and boy was it dark. No heavy duty towing and about all freeway miles. It wasn't soup or milkshake, but was just curious.
Thanks,
B

Good thing you looked. Perfect reason NOT to believe the oil in the diff is good for the life of the truck. I've had best results with changing at 5K and then every 30K for the life of the truck. Cool deal with the Mag cover is you can pull the little dip stick and check it.

Mine was dark colored too. Haven't pulled anything yet and only 9500 miles on the truck. I put in Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube and 8oz. of Mopar fiction modifer.

Bernie,
I had the dealer change mine the first time at about 12,000 miles so I didn't get to see it. I had the fluid changed over to synthetic at that time. I installed my Mag cover at 45,000 miles, 33,000 on the fluid and it looked great. I now have 63,000 miles on the truck, 18,000 on the fluid. It looks and smells like new. I am wondering how often to change the front differential. It sees very little 4x4 use.
Arlan

Arlan, change the front about every second rear change. There isn't any stress on the fluid but the front is still turning. Regards Pete

I put in the Mobil one also. I always have had good luck with it. I also put in two bottles of the friction modifier.
Like it was said above, now I can keep an eye on it with the dipstick.
Thanks for all replies.

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to add some of my observations with my truck. I have a Mag-Hytec cover. I put the cover on somewhere around 13K miles. I have not topped off fluid or changed it since. My truck now has 49,746 miles on it with probably 20% of that mileage towing a 10K TT. I checked the level of the fluid about 2 weeks ago and the fluid is still the blue color that it was when I installed the cover. I'm using Amsoil Series 2000 75W90 gear lube. What's nice about this stuff is that it has limited slip protection. I plan on doing an analysis of the lube soon. I highly recommend the Mag-Hytec and the Amsoil gear lube setup that I am using. The factory supplied gear lube was a dark color as well. The peace of mind my present setup gives me can not be measured in dollars.

I have a limeted slip rear end on my 2001 4x4. Can you use Synthetic gear lube?. And do you still need to use the Limeted slip additive with it?

I changed both front and rear fluids last weekend, at a little over 10k. Figured while I was getting dirty, might as well do 'em both. I used Amsoil 2000 75-90. The front was perfectly clean, while the rear was very dark. I purchased a bottle of friction modifier, just in case, but have not had to add any to the rear end.

I changed my diff fluid at about 40000 to Amzoil series 2000 75-90, and didn't add any friction modifier to it, and it seems to work fine. I had heard you didn't need to add any. . . Mine is getting a little dark already though. My series 2000 was golden colored, not blue. . .

Is the "Anti spin" rear option same as
what the rest of the world calls limited slip?

Thanks in advance,
Charles

One more thing... Do you have to replace the gasket after removing the diff. cover or do you use silicone? When I had my GMC gasser, I used a gasket, but was told NOT to use any silicone.

Thanks again. .

EMDDIESEL: Yes, you can use synthetic gear lube in your rear differential. In fact, the owners manual calls for the use of synthetic 75W-140, IF you do a lot of towing. Sta-Lube and Amsoil both make this weight synthetic, and the Amsoil has the limited-slip friction modifier already in it. Unless Sta-Lube has changed, it does not so you would need to add it to be on the safe side.

I had 63000 on mine before I changed mine all hard miles, mine was dark but looked pretty good for that many miles, and no shavings on the magnetic plug. Changed it with Amsoil 75w-140 you do not need modifyers with this gear lube, works great with locking diffs.
Front was clean as a wistle but changed it anyway. Amsoil rules #ad
Edit:You do not need a gasket, just a tube of rtv,I called my dealer they do not have a gasket for these covers they use the rtv #ad

I just put on the mag hytec yesterday, the oil was pretty dark. Had changed to Amsoil 75 140 at 2500 miles and now again at 21000 miles. No limited slip additive and no problems. The magnetic drain plug had very few and fine particles on it.

I put the Mag-Hytec on this weekend. 5K miles on the truck. The gear oil that came out was pretty dark. I don't know what it looks like new, but this stuff had a greenish tint. I refilled with LE 607.

The Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 is blue in color... if yours is golden colored you have their (standard) synthetic 75W-90 gear oil in your differential.

EMDDIESEL, yes you can use synthetic gear oil with a limited slip differential. I'm currently using Amsoil Series 2000 75W-90 (100% synthetic) in both differentials. As my LSD was setup pretty tight at the factory, I had to add an additional amount of Mopar friction modifier to JUST eliminate the chatter in low speed corners. However, most TDR members have not had to add any additional friction modifier with the Series 2000.
