I started noticing a raw diesel smell after shutdown, after checking it out, I could only find a damp spot around the water drain on the fuel filter. Thought it was my return line as these were changed just year before last. Popped the drain a few times thinking the drain valve itself was the problem, not seating. Last week it turned loose, leaking around wire leads. Not just a little, A half of a tank in 60 miles! The replacment is $52. 00. Just a warning for you guys as it could have been worse. My trailer bed and undercarriage is well oil though, waterproofed! If you do notice a leak, get a new drain on order!

Leakage

Someone else had this same problem a couple weeks ago. If you need to replace it, Go to your cummins dealer to get one. When I bought mine (broken wire) it came in combination with a new filter. filter prices are up now so expect around $30. 00. I believe Geno's has them also. A lot cheaper them $52. 00. But when changing the filter ALWAYS make sure it is tight.

I had same trouble and i keep a spare in truck now. genos has them real cheap 16. 95 ea

I thought mine was leaking from the sensor so I ordered a new one from Geno's. Put the new sensor and it still leaked. Turned out the filter was leaking at the seam on the collar where the sensor screws in. Oh well its fixed now and no more diesel smell

I do have another filter, I will have to order a spare water drain from Genos to. I guess I had better check the old filter also. The wires are diesel soaked and the leaked looked like it originated from there, at least what I could see from under the truck while it was running. Hard to tell with diesel hitting you in the face! Well on a Saturday I had to resort to dealer for replacement, everytime I buy anything it goes on sale the next day!

Happened to me at 135K miles. New sensor solved the problem.

Happened to mine about a month ago. 172K miles. Started slow. Noticed a fuel smell when I stopped. By the time I drove 30 miles home it was pouring.

Happened to me a couple of weeks ago fuel was leaking from water sensor. I did not discover mine until after I had put a brand new filter and lost 26 gallons of fuel in about 20 miles. If I remember correctly the new sensor from the dealer was about 59 bucks with out tax. the dealer told me that they sell the fuel filters with the water sensor now for 32 bucks. Good luck and hope this doesn't happen to you again. Cause man it sucks!

bad Filters???

whats causing these filters to go away? Off brand filters?? different overflow valves?? stretched springs?? maybe to far?? might be nice to know why. looks like all that are effected are 94-96 vintage.
