the mighty cummins saves the day

Hi guys, I am fairly new to TDR, but am having problems. Over on the lst gen forum the most willing to help and professional bunch I have ever met have been trying to get me started again. If one wanted to review the bidding to date, I am DonTX over there, thread is "New Member Needs Help". In short order I have received 170 replies from 3397 viewings. That is what you can call help. One of the readers there suggested I bring my problem over here for wider views.

Basically my problem is that the darned thing don't want to start! In review, I have replaced the non working lift pump, put on a DAVCO fuel processor unit to more closely monitor fuel flow, ran additives thru the fuel, put new batteries in it, and even pulled the injectors and had them overhauled.

The problem therefore seems to be confined to the injection pump, which is some sort of ******* stuff Cummins put on there, a VP14 Bosch unit. I am unable to even find any data on this pump, apparently some used an electrical timing advance unit even. This unit only has 40 thousand miles on it, but the engine was made in 1987, and the problem presented itself during a 200 miles run. Anybody here even heard of a VP14 pump? On a 5. 9?

Not yet, but getting close to it! It is getting a strong 12v with the ign on, not cranking. Gonna check voltage cranking next now that the banjo bolts are not a problem. :-laf .

We had a similar problem on our 96 ctd, ends up, solenoid that turns the full pump on had burned up. It is about 1. 5" in diameter and 5" long and has a square mount with an adjustable arm that hooks onto the back of the pump. Make sure that it is actually moving when the key is turned on.

Wow, wish you had a photo. I cannot recall anything like that on mine. This is what the shutoff solenoid looks like on mine, coil is intact, clicks the rod up when it gets 12volts
