Hey all,
I finally got around to a little job I have been meaning to do for awhile and that is installing some 20 watt work lights on the back of the truck. The job turned out to be successful as the little lights seem to put out a lot of light. This time of year I often have to work behind the truck or hook up trailers when it is dark outside. These should also be good in setting up a campsite, etc... These lights should really come in handy.

Here is my question: The rocker switch I installed can be illuminated by power from the dashboard lights. I guess I am not exactly sure where a good place to connect to the dash light circuit. I am gun-shy since the truck is controlled by canbus system and I admit I don't fully understand how the system operates. I am used to simple 12v systems. Where would be a good place to connect to the dash light circuit?

Here are couple of pictures from the project. It took a lot of courage to cut holes in a perfect bumper, I was very nervous!

Since you already installed a switch and had the courage to cut holes in your bumper, why not just run a new circuit from the fuse box to your switch and bypass the worry associated with pulling off a different circuit? If there are no available slots on the fuse box you can always get a fuse board that plugs into the available socket on the fuse box. You've gone this far; I say your new lights will love having their own circuit to play with. And so will your dashboard lights. The only leap of faith is going to be drilling through the firewall to run the wires, and that's a walk in the park compared to cutting holes in your bumper.

The easiest access to dash light is cig lighter or ashtray.
Nothing to worry about it as long as you just use it to light the switch that has an LED in it.
