Over the last couple of years I had noticed a couple of hairline cracks about 1" long at the corners of the "dirt tray" on top of the dash, but overall the dash was in pretty good shape. Driving home the other day after yet another blazing hot 106 degree day, I made it about 3 miles with the AC on when I heard a loud "pop" and observed that my dash was now split in two, right in front of the steering wheel, from the windshield all the way to the front of the dash. Argggh.

The plastic on the dash is surprisingly thick, guess that's why it made the loud noise.

Anyway, at work I was grousing about the dash failure, and one of my coworkers who has a 2001 Ram 1500 showed me HIS truck - the dash had several cracks that one day merged into a spider-web type shape that the middle fell out of, leaving a gaping hole in the top of the dash that you could drop a football into longways.

Any ideas for a fix or replacement source?

Another Idea

Here is another idea, this is a cloth like cover, that is very well fitted to the original contours of the dash. I saw this one on my friends Powerstroke, and immediately ordered one for my Dodge. Utilimat I think is the name, I can look up their web address if you are interested.

Dash mats are a great protector for any truck, whether you're in the heat or not. I've had them in the past three trucks I've owned. You can put things on the dash and they stay put, no moving around.
