Which should last longer, tall and narrow or taller and wider?

I saw a connector in the service manual that said daytime running lights... Does anyone have them? My '01 doesn't... I don't want them, but was wondering what the heck the connector is there for...

I saw in my manual that the daytime running lights were on the Canadian vehicles. Anyone help on that? Scott?

I used to write electrical sections for service manuals for the big 4 manufactures back in the mid 80's. At that time DRL's were required equipment in Canada. Since then the manufactures have just sold them on all they’re US cars bragging about "voluntarily installing safety equipment" on their cars.

But they sure had a screwed up way of making The DRL's back in the 80's. They had a module that pulsed voltage to the headlights at a high frequency, which made them look dim, compared to normal lights. WHY? Just do like most Europe cars and make it so the headlights come on when you start the car.

I commute over a winding mountain road so I tend to drive with my headlights on anyway. The only problem is that the odomoter dims to the extent that it is almost impossible to read during the day. I've debated about putting a manual switch for the odometer dimmer or else buying the daytime running light relay. If anyone knows anything more about this relay, I would like to hear more about it. I have not yet studied the electrical diagrams.

The day time running lamp (DRL)is more than a relay it's a module. It's funtions vary from year to year, some run the lites at half power only if the vehical is moveing, others shut down the lites if the parking brake is on,all this is bypassed if you turn on the brights. In other words it's much easier to install a small toggle switch, next to the lamp switch, that bypasses the dimmer circuit when the lights are on. I did this on my '95 because with the lights on in the daytime I couldn't see the display on my clock or overhead console.

Dresslered, on my 00, if you roll the dimmer control for your dash lights, at the top you will find two clicks on the switch. One of them brightens up your odometer and comp. lights for when you drive in daylight with your lights on.

I had a VW Jetta that had DRL's. One problem, during the day people were always flashing their lights at me. I guess they were telling me to turn them off. Only I couldn't turn them off! It got old. Also, I think that the Canadian trucks are the ones that have DRL's.

Thanks for explaining how the dimmer switch works!
