Interesting Commute to Work!

Oh, that Price !!

I read somewhere that DC has a diesel hybrid vehicle in the works. This would be a world first I believe. Anyone heard about this?

Hybrid

Yup, I have seen articles about that project for at least four years. In fact, I think it has been in road tests for at least three years. Pretty simple concept requiring only off the shelf technology. Runs on battery electric power untill faster speed or power are needed, then the diesel provides the power and recharges the battery. No plug in time at home required.

World first???

Seems to me that the railroads have been using diesel generators to power their motors for years! Seriously, I can't for the life of me figure why the Honda (?) used a gas engine for their gen power. Ray

I saw a VW diesel/electric w/batteries in a magazine several years ago as a prototype. It would run off the 3 phase brushless motor until voltage got low on more power needed than switch to the diesel engine. It had two electromagnetic clutches to control power flow.

Like this: (gearbox)Clutch(electric motor)Clutch(Diesel engine),

This way the diesel could be running and charging batteries while the car was sitting still. Pretty slick!!
