Towing 8,000# TT in Overdrive

<font color=blue>Trying to convince someone he will be fine with using Diesel Dynamic Stage II's + EZ Edge for towing. He has a 2000 automatic, so he has the "bigger turbo".

Can any of you running this combination comment here please..... what are your EGT's like?????

Yep... that bum above is talkin bout me. I have a 2000 auto, 3. 54 differential (as Kat said), and my muffler fell off someplace. I am debating whether to go with DD or Bullydog Stage 1 or 2 injectors to assist my EZ. Though I am worried about my EGT's, due to living in high altitude.

Just to tell you why I am worried. Kat has one of the HOT PE boxes and a 4" exhaust. When he came here he put his box on the second setting and stepped on it. His truck showed 1400 degrees immediatly. I don't want to have that problem... especially if I am towing. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you have had the opportunity to compare the stage 1 with stage 2 injectors... tell me what you noticed between the 2. Which one do you like better and why?

Thanks for the help

Kev

My 2 cents. I have DD3's. Only towed with them twice(6K lb. trailer), but egt's weren't a problem. It ran great. It made me want to tow more often. My EZ is on order, so I can't comment on the combo yet.

As for Kat running so hot. I talked to him on SETDR chat one night. If I remember correctly, he still had a stock wastegate(21psi) and a small turbo(9cm). Kat, is this still the case? If so, then I would say that accounts for much of the egt problem he has.

Lastly, in general I think timing boxes(EZ, VA, etc. ) and injectors(275, DD, Bully, etc. ) seem to have less egt problems than fueling boxes. However, as I don't tow much, that is just an opinion.

this fall ( oct ) pulled 5th to Bill Kondolays. Had DD1's and Bully Dog boost mod & elbow, 4" ex. My egt south of I70 would top t 1250*, the farther north of I70 the cooler the egt's along the I5 cooridor would top out at 1000*, 1050 pulling the grade south of Pendalton, Or. . the further north the lower the egt the farther south the higher the egt. Ambient tempertures were not a factor as It rained all the way up and snowed all the way back. I have since installed DD2's and have a EZ. I will see what that combo does. If too hot, then box will come off first and boost module back on, then if needed injectors back to DD1's. I have no problems with the box when not towing as I don't do standing start to 115mph runs up hill, down hill ? well maybe

JNutter - As far as the stage 1 and stage 2 injectors. How does the power differ between the two? Do the 2's seem stronger? I hear that the 1's seem to be a bit more punchy, while the 2's seem stronger at higher RPM's. Tell me about your comparison between the two. What made you decide to go with the Stage 2's. Are you happy with them? Any info would be great.

Thanks a million guys. .

<font color=blue>Yes thats still the case, I have not modified the wastegate at all. I want to keep it stock since I have a whole new turbo to put on. Which will take place the first week of Feb.

I have told Kevin as long as he stays away from a fueling box injectors + EZ he will be fine, since he already has a bigger exhaust housing. I told him I would go 4" Exhaust just for piece of mind.

So thought I would post here for some hard numbers to convince him.

DD II's + EZ is about 300hp to the rear wheels.

Kat, I have a va and boost module and i pull a 28 ft 5th wheel and a 18 foot boat behind the 5th wheel ( 65 feet total length) and pull up some big hill west of topeka ks and the egt are not a problem. and i have all the power that i need. Do you know how much more power i would get if i put in some 275 injectors?

Well I don't know about the VA + 275's but I can give you numbers on injectors + EZ.

275's + EZ = 265hp
DD I's + EZ = 280hp
DD II's + EZ = 300hp
DD III's + EZ = Dunno??

If I recall you have a 3" straight pipe exhaust, if you add the 275's you might want to also consider going to a 4" Exhaust for towing purposes for a safety margin on EGT level. And then your clutch comes into question as to how long it will pull those loads at that power level before crying to "change me". Make sense?

What wood be the best set up for auto. I will be towing about 14,000

God willing, I hope to save up the money sometime in the near future to do some major league Bombing to my truck. I've been thinking about injectors as they seem to have the least determential affect on EGT's, as well as a timing box (a-la PE EZ box). How would this work if I have a straight 3 inch exhaust (muffler & resonator replaced with flex pipe)? I want to go bigger than the 275 injectors, really would like the DD III's or Bully Dog III's, but, would be willing to live with II's if that's what it takes to keep EGT's in check.

SOP dyno says I can not tell the difference MT between the DD1's and DD2's but there is only about a 20 -25 hp increase. The sop dyno says the DD1's w/ EZ was snappier than w/ the DD2's. In order to get all the power available and lower egt with the injectors you will have to install the boost elbow. If you tow and find the egt excessive then you will have to pull your EZ box and that will leave you with out a boost module, unless you have one stashed.
The DD1's had about as much power as the VA had with lower egt. Here at altitude and southern desert egt run way higher than further north and at low altitudes. The stock eth here will run 1200* mt. I could run the VA with the DD1's up north but could not pull the big grades with it, I would pull over and unplug it. The EZ shows about the same egt increase m/t that the VA did. I am trying the DD2's as the 1's would produce less egt than the boxes and if I can hit the egt firewall with injectors then I wont have to worry about the possibility ( however slim, aka: VA + stock ISB = broken ISB ) over advancing timing and possible long term damage. M/T I have no problem using a box around town, Towing ??.
