This is my first post, but I have been "lurking" for some time now. I will be towing a thirty foot livestock trailer(~18,000# max), and am curious as to what power modifications are working for others. In looking at the information that has appeared here, it seems that the ETH may not do well with a box due to limitations with the injector pump. How are the DD3's w/HX40. Is anyone using this setup to work as a tow vehicle, or is it better just for those who enjoy the high speed handling characteristics of pickup trucks?

First off, Welcome Aboard!
Second, I can't answer your question but I got my 2001 3500 for towing and am still trying to find out the best way to go for towing.

From what I have seen so far, DD3's alone will not give you enough extra power to turn an HX-40 to its maximum benefit... . you'll need a fueling box.

My current plan for pre-Spring is to add a TST PowerMax 3 (the 10-level adjustable one) to my 2001 ETH (with an EZ box already), DD3's, an HX-40, and a beefier clutch as soon as one BESIDES the dual disc McLeod is out and working well.

Another option I'm exploring is Diesel Dynamics' Stage III package (400 hp, 850 lbs-ft if I remember right), OR their new pump mod (which isn't being sold yet). They got 403 rear wheel hp out of that pump mod and NO plug-in modules at all. They got 420+ rwhp out of that mod plus a module.

I'm not sure I NEED that kind of power, or if the truck would even hold up to it the way I drive. #ad

Of course, a 4" exhaust, USGear exhaust brake, and Psychotty air intake are going on before any other power mods...

I've had the DD III's, HX 40, 4" exhaust, boost module, and K$N air filter installed on my ETH for a couple on months now and love it. The DD III's spool up the HX 40 quickly to 38-40 lbs boost. I have never seen the EGT's above 1100 and that was WOT up a mountain pass. I have not towed with it yet, but I don't think it will pose any problems at all. I use the truck for every day driving and rarely ever hot rod. It is very drivable but the power is there when you need it. I can't imagine needing a fueling box with this combo unless you want it purely for the sake of more HP. The truck recently dynoed at 349 HP and 689 torque at the rear wheels and I have not had any clutch slippage yet. I highly recommend the combo. Hope this helps.

OK, I'll tell you what he said. The stage III's with the hx40 and larger exhaust are working well. EGT's under control in his case. He also has the EZ for low end and towing.

Am gonna have to agree with you, without the Blue box being on, I was driving a slug. Before the HX-40 I had the BB set really low, with the addition of the HX-40, it had to be set at 40% now am back to my stock turbo... heck... Ted j's(frank)dually ran a 14. 1 in a 7100 pound dually with the stock turbo. .

Bill, which box do you have?

Looks like after I get the exhaust and intake on, I'll get DD3's just before the HX-40. Besides, would be nice to monitor EGTs to see what changes.

I'm surprised your clutch is holding with that power. Go tow something and let's see if it holds. #ad

wiz1,
Do you have the regular version of the EZ or DD's version. Just curious if anybody has tried DD's? DD's fuel settings seem to be more to my liking, but I can't find anybody who has tried it.

I do not have a box yet and I really don't need one. I am considering purchasing DD's new box and maybe their pump mod later on. Like I said, I don't need any more, but I may want more. I guess I have been lucky with my clutch and it probably will start slipping when I begin towing or if I start doing burnouts. My turbo is non-wastegated and it does spool to 38-40 quickly and easily according to my Isspro boost gauge.

Guys correct me if I am wrong. . but if you go out to DD's website and look at the picture of their new box. Isn't that just an EZ box with a DD sticker on it? It sure does look the same and have the same connections???

Evan Beck told me a little about the DD box when I was IMing him a couple days ago. He believes the DD box does not advance the timing as much as the EZ or VA boxes, which provides a little more safety margin, expecially under load. Too much advance timing is NOT good for a diesel. I believe DD's module is their own design, but if it's built by PowerEdge it is to DD's specs.

From what I've gathered, the DD box is made by PE but is programed to be better suited to their injectors. I have experimented with a friends PE EZ on my truck with the DD3's, HX40 etc. and it ran very strong but smoked badly. My be OK for some or for dyno runs but not to my liking for everyday driving. I am hoping the DD box enhances the performance with out all the smoke.

Now where on earth did you get that idea??? #ad

The DD box IS the EZ Edge box, but it has different timing and fuel settings. It is supposed be setup specifically for the DD injectors. Not sure how different the timing is from the regular EZ, but the fuel setting are as follows: one setting is timing only, one is timing and more fuel after 20psi of boost, and one is timing and more fuel after 2psi. I called the guys at Edge to get more info on the DD version. In short, they told me it basically has a more extreme range of settings than the regular EZ. Based on that and the fact that I already have DD3's, I decided to try the DD version. I should have it in a week, so I'll let you guys know how it works.
