Boost???

Anyone running just DD3s and a boost module on their ETH?

I thought I'd ask for some insights on the DD3s as will be purchasing some used ones soon; so I am looking for comment on things such as boost numbers, dyno numbers, idle characteristics, seat of the pants, smoke and EGTs. I don't tow, I am getting gauges before the injectors go in, and am planning on a new clutch and turbo tentatively. Any input or comment is appreciated.

TIA,

joe

Do it, you will NOT regret the 3's!

Joe, I ran DD 3's and a Diesel Dynamics boost module for about 2 months, then I got a DD True Torque Power Module and an HX40 installed at the DD shop in Vegas. The DD 3's alone are much more :D than bone stock, but when you add the EZ (or TTPM), they basically double the impact of the DD 3's by themselves. Of course then you need a South Bend clutch... ... ... . :D

I also had a boost elbow on my HX35 at that time. I could get around 30 #'s boost if I remember right. I didn't dyno the truck until last month, when I had everything you see in my sig, so I can't say what the DD 3's alone make in HP numbers, but I would guess between 50 - 80 HP??? Idle was, and has always been as smooth as glass with the 3's in my truck. no noticeable smoke at all from the drivers seat with just the 3's either.

But if you can get a set of DD 3's, I say absolutely go for it!!!!!!!!! I am currently about to upgrade from my TTPM to a Hot PE Comp box, and maybe early next year when the credit card recovers, a set of either DD Super Mentals or Bully Dog Step 5's  :D

I promise you will love those DD 3's!

High Elevation & DD3s

Joesoot, how much of the time do you spend in Colorado, and does that include jaunts over I-70 or any other places above 6000 feet?

I have DD2s, last summer going through parts of Nevada above 6000 feet I had to be real careful with the throttle or else I could really belch the smoke. I only had the DD2s and boost module then. If I rolled into the throttle very slowly and was careful not to outfuel my boost level, I was OK, but required a lot of concentration! But decide to gun it off boost and. . . holy macerel!

I would suggest DD2s in conjunction with a box that switches off if you are going to operate at high elevation very often and want to keep smoke in check.

4000 and some odd feet is about the elevation where I live occasionally, and often play on weekends around or above 8,000-10,000 ft. I am living at sea level right now in Kalifornia, don't know how long. Many trips on I-70 and I-15.

I figured I might as well go straight to the DD3s, as I see alotta folks taking the piecemeal route and spending alot because they want more. I'd like to get close to 400hp eventually. Baby steps I guess.

Gosh, I wonder how CUMINNTSTRKN's truck smokes?

a member, mopars1, has the II's and just a boost module. he has dynoed a few times at 302. 4HP 626. 5TQ he was in kansas with those numbers.

I gots Bully dog 3"s, with my fuel box off, it can smoke like a b***h if your in it, click on the box and traffic stops:eek:

don't down play the elevation/EGT thing, I am at sea level, and can push 1300 easily without the box on, and if I 2K feet higher in elevation, it's a noticable difference

After he put in the 5's we went out to try them out. I followed him in my truck and we stopped on the hwy, he hit the go pedal and I followed, he was no more than 15 feet in front of me as the smoke started rolling and I could not see his trucks taillights!! Can you say blackout?

I ran around with DD3's and a boost module for about 9 months. I dynoed before & after, and I gained 116HP with the DD3's. Dynoed at 234 before, and 350 after. MPG went up too. Then I added an EZ, and got even more power. Will be getting on the dyno in a few weeks. :D

Jim, I think you almost have too much smoke for a singe exhaust. . . I say you need a dual 5 inch system! Then you can clear out BOTH sides of the freeway in one clean sweep :D :D

are you hooked up to a gas station???

That is trully just bad @$$!!!#ad

Can you see the fuel gauge go down when you hammer it like that?

I have DD3's, an HX-40, and the Hot DD UPM box. I have my power and response settings like this (power level, response level):

1,1

2,1

3,2

4,3

5,5

I run around town in 3 most of the time, but when I'm on a trip, I use mode 1 or 2. With it on 3 here at sea level, I get a little bit of smoke. It's enough to annoy anybody who doesn't want to see any, but I think it's very negligible. With it on 1, I have to really nail it to get any smoke at all.

I also spend several days a month in Reno (elev. 4500') and with it on 1, I still get less smoke than when I run on 3 (with response on 2).

DD also says they have a special chip that makes the lower response modes "Super Defuel" modes to further reduce smoke, so my suggestion is to pick up one of these boxes and run that chip if you really want to curtail the smoke.

I remember on my '96 (auto), I had a TST #5 plate and 16cm2 housing, but no injectors. At 5000' in Colorado, I could roll on it with my camper loaded and just completely obscure everything behind me with smoke. It was pretty funny. Then while there, I put in a set of 230 hp injectors and it only got better (worse). :)

Is it possible to tow with the DDIII's, or is it just too much to keep the EGT's down without out a Hx40??? Just trying to get some Ideas for future BOMBin's. . Thanks

Bryan

Towing with DD3's is still possible. I had my DD3's and an EZ in with just the HX-35/12 and with care and attention, my EGTs were very acceptable. I was still able to tow up a 6% grade (GCWR of around 18k lbs) at 55 mph keeping temps right at 1200 deg... but minor throttle fluctuations would send temps way up in a second.

I'd say you'll be fine as long as you have a 4" exhaust and Psychotty. If you do plan on mountainous driving, it can still be done, just be careful. The higher the altitude, the worse it'll get.

Thanks for the info Rob... This knocks me out of the the DDIII's... I can handle all the others, but I do some towing on the weekends... Usually pedal to the metal... Minor Throttle Fluctuations are NOT in my vocab... :D :D

thanks

tractor nut

i tow with my setup. you just have to watch your guages. at 25k gross up an 8% grade i can go 60 in 5th at 1200 pre. that's at about 1/2 throttle.
