I am new to posting but have been following for a while. I now have DDII's only(low smoke version). I would like to have more down low on the RPM's when towing camper. I have a 5 speed 4x4. Has anyone run DDII's in combination with a PE EZ? How was performance VS smoke at low boost and at what #boost does it clear up?

Thanks in addvance for replies.

I have tested the PE EZ with DD 3's and found the smoke to be to much. I just finished testing the new DD box (PE EZ programed for DD 's) and was impressed with the performance. The power was smooth and strong and it did not produce unacceptable levels of smoke. However, it made my clutch slip significantly under hard acceleration in the higher gears. I will purchase a DD box once the clutch issue is resolved.

<font color=blue> Just curious when you tested the EZ, did you change the jumper setting to allow the fueling to come in at a lil higher boost from the EZ?? The EZ has three different settings available if you take off the two allen screws and move the jumper pin. If you did try this then please disregard this post.

Kat, when we tested the PE the pin was set on the third position. We tested the DD box on the #2 position which is programmed to add fuel and not as much timing advance. The engine operated smoother with the DD box.

<font color=blue>The DD box IS a EZ Edge, only its programmed to DD's specs I believe. Why not call Edge Products and see what they say? They can prolly tell you the differences.

Me personally I want the smoke..... do its DDIII's and the EZ for me... ... ... ...

Kent, the DD box is made by PE to DD's specs and yes it does advance the timing but not as significantly as the EZ. I don't think as much timing advance is needed with the bigger injectors. When I tested the PE EZ , the engine would briefly idle a little rough after hard acceleration runs. I did not have this problem with DD's box.

Hey Bill,

Good to have you join the "NEED a CLUTCH BUNCH"! Gee I wonder what we are doing wrong?

Keep in touch, would like to know which clutch you get.

Things to come; The clutch has let me know it is going to need attention very soon!
Pyro, 50# Boost and Fuel Pressure gauges (have Ultra lites will install shortly), PE EZ timing module and injectors (have Bully Dog step III injectors just need to install them), have 2 KC Daylighters (Stainless with 385,000 candlepower each), have 2 KC Fog lamps(Stainless 100w each) and waiting for Bar II Stainless Brush Guard to arrive, then will mount guard and lights.

Big Bob, it was just a matter of time. I've had the HP to spin the clutch but had been taking it easy. The DD box put it over the top.

Kent,
My truck is a 2000 w/6spd,but it is the same
ETC 24v that is in your 98. 5.
I have DD II's in my truck, but they are the old version,so they do smoke a little more (but not much) than yours would.

A few months ago I tried a VA box on my truck, and was disappointed in the results.
No matter how light I would ease into the throttle,I would have a continuous big black cloud. If I stomped on the throttle from a dead-stop,I would leave such a thick cloud, anyone behind me could get into an accident. The smoke did not clear up when boost built up... it got worse!
As for power? None! With just the stage II setup my truck maxes at 34psi of boost. With the VA box installed,I could only max 31psi of boost.

As a side note, after that I hooked up a Bluechip Blue Box... I got far more power with waaayyy less smoke than what the VA box gave me. VA's not worth it. I wouldn't want to cause someone else an accident from my smokescreen.

Come on Mike, your DD2s smoke more than ANY DD3s I've seen.

Actually John, that time you saw me puff out all that black smoke was because I hadn't tightned my turbo hoses for six months. I didn't know I had to... they were all very loose. After I tightned them,I realized I had to go back retighten them once a week.
Since I put on just the upper two Blue silicone hoses,I can go over a month without having to retighten the lowers ones (haven't had retightend the silicone ones yet).

With tight hoses my DDII's don't smoke much. They might smoke as much as your low smoke DDIII's. Next time I'm in Enumclaw we'll have to compare.

-Mike
