Competition Which is better Dynamic Balanced tires or Static?

Competition How many members at Carlisle last saturday?

Guys, I need to pick your brains a little. You can see what I've done to accessorize my rig to date. I have commissioned Nowel to build a set of twins for me to emphasize the low-end and midrange responsiveness and keep the top end EGT's under control. The truck is basically a daily driver that I use to get myself to work and back and occasionally terrorize the freeways. Racing may be something I'll take a stab at down the line. As I'll be going to Las Vegas in a couple of months anyway, I'm toying with the idea of having Diesel Dynamics install their cam and port/polish and O-ring the head. I'd like to know what you think about the cam and head work and what might be expected performance-wise with these modifications and perhaps pitfalls to avoid in the process?

i have the dd cam and it works great. my mileage is up 1. 5mpg. the best way i can describe how it is working is to compare my racing. at maymadness i was running with slicks at the track i was coming out of the hole just as hard as the guys running in 4wd. in muncie after the cam install i couldn't hook up with the slicks. the boost comes on so hard with the cam and twins that i was spinning all the way thru 1st gear and most of the way thru 2nd. my exhuast has quieted down a bunch with the cam also. i can't help you with a ported head.

Jim, thanks for the valuable feedback. I've looked at the dyno chart for the cam, and it looks like it shifts the power curve down about 100 rpm and a small increase in peak HP earlier as well. Did you notice that your boost builds substantially quicker and at lower RPM? What changes did you see for smoke production and EGT's?

as far as smoke goes i have a really tight convertor so i have smoke off the bottom even with my twin turbo's. but i have almost no smoke up on top. it builds boost much quicker which is why my slicks won't hook up anymore. i can build over 60psi on the dyno with no smoke on top.

One more by-the-way. The DD guys use a Marine Cam blank vs. the ones that came stock in our truck. The cam is much stronger at the gear end, where a bolt runs about 5" into the cam for much better gear retention. The marine cam is also nitrided and shot peened, as I recall. Good peace of mind stuff. The head porting will equalize your EGT/Power between cylinders by removing the two intake channel obstructions as mentioned by Joe D. in one of his articles. With twins, you're going to be sitting on a missile!!!:D

I'm running a cam, but is a radical design, it needs the pistons notched.

It pulls from 1800 rpm to 4000 now with the big push at about 2500 on.

The head was just cleaned up a bit, no need for massive porting on these things. Waste of time and will weaken them.

Prolly not what you are looking for.

If it were me, I would keep an eye on the Piers cams that are being tested across the country.

No doubt they will be just as good or better than the brand V, and you'll save about $2000.
