Hi all, well i think it has finally happened to me,98. 5 24 valve just quit. no codes, has fuel pressure from a newer lift pump, but won't start, just cranks. anyone have a decent price on a vp-44? :--)

engine not running

Well if it only turns over. Does it need to be rebleed? Don't supose that you just got fuel did you ? If not lift the negitives off the batteries. Leave off for half hour. Try apps reset. Shall see what you may need. What are the numbers on the bottom corner of the sticker on the door MDH?

I did the apps reset about two months ago,but i had a code when that happened. The truck has been towed from it's place of death,so i don't have the numbers. The truck did just start the low fuel warning bell a few miles before the complete quit. hopefully it isn't the vp-44 but i'm not holding my breath. How long are the warrenty on the vp-44,i had one replaced under warrenty with about 20k on the truck, now at 104k????

not running

Mine ran out of fuel once and I must have gone about 130 KM's so now I don't go past 50 km's past DTE. How was the truck running before it died?Because mine ran for about a year with out the lift pump working I know this because I had it dynoed and it was 130 RWHP and the diesel te-hehehehehe-ch said "that was about right" :-{} :-{} so the apps never has been reset until recently  When the new pump was put on it made no difference on how it ran !!!!

If there are no codes and it just flat out quit, I would start with a new CPS (Crank Position Sensor, ~= $80 from Cummins). When they fail, this is usually what happens, a dead truck with no codes. Not hard to change, it is back by the starter, just soak it with PB Blaster before you go to change it.

If it was the VP44, you would usually have a p0216, p1688, or p1689. Also, a CPS is much less expensive to replace than an injection pump.

im having a similiar problem. i have a truck in my shop that wont start on its own. the guy uses starting fluid, then if he keeps it over 1000 it may run or may not. poor guy is 600 miles from home. it has 15 psi fuel pressure, but when i check for fuel at the head nothing comes out. the lift pump acts wierd to me also. when doing the cranking fuel pump test it doesnt always run for the full 25 seconds. it almost acts like it is modulated. the thing is acting wierd. i am putting a vp44 on it tommorrow. unless someone has something else i can check. thanks in advance, mark

btw it did have the dreaded p0216 code in it.

what bob said, using starting fluid in the air intake can cause fire or explosion. think about would you spray that in your home toaster. its the same thing. enough said.

Me too, reman vp-44 did the trick, now the fuel rails are leaking at the injector,i can't win. back to the dealer tomorrow.
