Put on new ECM this afternoon, recal. TPS, cleared code with scanner that told me the ECM had been disconnected (don't remember the code off hand). I took the ruck around the corner and had to walk about a mile home. It is now showing codes 1689,and 0602.

The lift pump curcuit had quit in the old ECM and was part of the reason for the change, but it did not fix the problem. The truck will not keep fuel pressure on it's own. The lift pump would give some fuel pressure (around 10 psi) until you crank the truck then would drop dead. I have been working around that till the ECM change today by putting the pusher on a toggle switch to give me 18-20psi constantly when running.

The boss is getting rather angry at the old girl and the threat of the VP44 ain't gonna make her happy. May have to sell bombs to get the funds... .....

0602 almost always comes up with the catcher since the catcher is operating outside of the stock ecm parameters

0602 is just a nuisance code and does nothing to performance

p1689 ususally == new VP44 (error in communication between ECM and Injection Pump). You can check pins 13 and 23 on the ECM which go to pins 1 and 2 respectively on the PECM (VP44). This is a shielded twisted pair wire in the wireharness, that if damaged, can allow electrical interference and cause this code. Also, if you tapped the pump wire, any corrosion that builds up in the wire can cause a delta in resistance, causing a communication error.

Most likely, the electronics of the pump (VP44) are shot. Been there, done that many times.

Just finished changing the I. P. I am only getting a fair flow of fuel out of #'s 1,4,5. I can't tell that I'm getting much of anything out of #3 at all. I've gone back and checked the wiring harness and took the cover off the breather hose removed the I. P. gear nut to confirm the key alignment again. She's not even sputtering yet. I'm sure it should have by now.

I'm ready to start hurling tools... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

Once you begin to get a decent amount of fuel out of a line, you can tighten it up. The truck will not usually fire until you have at least 4 of the lines tight. Begin with 2 and 6 tight, then crank. As fuel begins comming out of the remaning lines, tighten them. You might have all six tight before it fires. It will eventually fire up, just don't burn up the starter (It will take some serious cranking to start the engine the first time.

Don't get worked up, it will start, they are just a PITA sometimes.

TSRAM,

does the tach move when you crank the engine?

If you had a bad crank or cam sensor (Dunno your MY ) without output then the ECM would not fire the engine. The strategy is like this, Key on, feeds 12Volt to pin 5 of the ECM, like saying, Hello wake up. Once the ECM is on it waits for the input ( varying signal ) from the Crank or Cam sensor ( depends on MY) then and only then the ECM sends signals to the VP = start. No signal form the crank/cam sensor, no go.

Marco

On Edit. Title sez "99 Dead" ops stupid me. The crank sensor is what your ECM looks for.

Second Edit. No pulses from the Crank sensor, no juice to the lift pump from the ECM.

Marco, yes the tach does move when turning over. I got the 602 and the 1689 code a few days prior to the ECM change. I changed the ECM and took the truck for a test ride. About the time that I got the truck out of my nieghborhood, she died. The code 1689 is still there and will not erase with the scanner.

I am still not getting the spray of fuel at the head like I should be by now. The key that came with the new pump is in the gear correctly, I have re-confirmed that. I have good fuel pressure at the I. P. banjo bolt. The batteries are dead now from trying to start the truck. I am leaving to go out of town until Sun. midday. I know the TDR is the only place I'll get any help on a Sun.
