I've been having some intermittent issues lately. Every once in a while when I push the pedal down there is a delay... maybe a second with no response. If I hold the pedal where it is or press down a little more the truck will eventually take off like nothing happened. I have no CEL or codes. The truck runs strong otherwise. The VP44 was replaced at 72k. I'm now at 136k. The symptoms don't seem the same as the last time the VP44 died. Could this be the APPS going south? Is there something else I should check out?

Thanks,

My first thought was VP44, but this acts different than last time. When I had problems before I would rev the motor in park and at about 1800 rpm it would smoke and sputter and just run like crap. I don't have that this time... . not yet anyway

Hi Brian; Mine did the same thing. It did throw a code & it was apps & computor voltage not the same. The code was cleared & I haven't had trouble since, knock on wood. Randy

UPDATE:

Well, the frequency of the problem has increased. That's not all bad however, as I have a little more information from the latest episodes. The problem only seems to occur when I accelerate from a stop or after slowing to make a hard turn. I have noticed that when the problem occurs if I mash the pedal It will take off. At this point I'm leaning toward the APPS. I did just see a post on another thread regarding cleaning the MAP sensor. I guess I'll start cheap and work from there.

Will NAPA or the other chain stores carry the apps?

Thanks. .

Can't say - but suspect it is a dealer-only item. Check with Cummins too.

Before changing it you could try a cheap cleaning. Pull the cover off, get some TV Tuner cleaner from Radio Shack, and spray off the wiper arm. Might clear it up.

There is a procedure for recalibrating the APPS voltage. I did mine and it is not difficult.

I think I remember someone bought an APPS off EBay. Different between stick and auto though. Might look there.

Cleaning the MAP is a good choice.

These things are rolling computers. Clean the keyboard, mouse, etc, etc. Same thing applies.

Dead Peadal and Smoke?

Ok I had an experience, not sure where to look, where is APPS located and ESS too? Service book says nothing about apps but does ess. Here's what happened; shut truck off after 20 minutes idle, 3 hours later start and begin to drive, no rpm rise above 1600 maybe, smoked like heck(blue)idled to side of road, check air cleaner for restrictions(none)5 mins go by, get in and mash accelerator pedal a few times, way more smoke, but no rpm rise, its gettin too much fuel but not enough air it seems, then it clears itself and runs fine, drive home, 3 hours, and the next day all works ok... Anybody care to advise, cannot find anything in service manual to point me right. . Tom L

2002 2500, TD, 90m miles, at, 2wd, relocated lift pump, fuel pressure guage(13# idle. . 8-9# 70mph) fuel filter changed, less than 1000 miles ago, has steel line to turbo from wastegate. Drove 12 hours in rain and cool weather the day before???
