What are the symptoms of the dead pedal?

Recently, in the morning, when I start out, it seems the accelerator wont work. If I stab it, the RPMs will go up a little but not like they should. It seems to be intermittent and doesn’t last long. I thought it was because I wasn’t letting it warm up enough, so this AM I sat there for almost 10 min and it still did it.

I haven’t had the codes checked (correct me if I am wrong, but they need to be checked on a reader) but I will go to AutoZone when I get a chance to chance.

No dummy lights on the panel.

Although I have a fuel pressure gauge on my work bench (got it last week) I haven’t had time to install it, but will this weekend.

I haven’t noticed the problem after the engine warms up. Except maybe one time a tiny bit, but the stereo was up and that may have been a gear change.

The truck has lots of miles 250,000 and when I got it 30,000 ago it had a re-man sticker on the VP. I changed the lift (got it from Cummins, an OE replacement) a couple months ago.

Do you think this is a dying VP?

Maybe an APPS/TPS?

Is there a check other than the codes?

thanks for any and all help

Ben

It does not really sound like an APPS failure, but more like a fuel restriction. When the APPS fails, the pedal just does not do anything, the truck will only idle.

Because you indicate that the accelerator will do something, but not like it should, I would tend to lean towards a fuel restriction or a VP44 that is dying.

Check the engine codes. A 0121 or a 0122 typically indicates a failing APPS, whereas a 0216, 1688, or 1689 can typically indicate a failing VP44.

You could also have an issue with a failing MAP sensor or IAT sensor with that number of miles.

A few months ago I took the IAT out and cleaned and tested it. It tested good, so I replaced it.

How do I check the MAP? And where is it?

Ben,

Very possibly is the APPS. Find a buddy with a '98. 5 to '02 Cummins with the same transmission (auto or manual) and swap his APPS (assuming his has no symptoms) on your truck (aluminum mount and all) and see if the symptoms persist. If they do you are probably looking at a new VP. If not, get an after market APPS by pm'ing Timbo here on TDR.

Godspeed,
Trent

my apps started doing the exact same thing about 3 years ago when i bought the truck i have nursed it along for 100,000 miles and now the throttle goes dead more frequently and for longer pertiods of time . i am going to get one of timbos units as quick as i hear back from him . dodge wants 530 bucks for a new apps

I started thinking about when it happens and was wondering if there was some kind of a temp related restriction to the throttle when the engine is cold??

My trouble only happens before it comes up to operating temp.

Is it possible that it is just acting like it should?

just got back from Auto Zone (closest parts store w/ a free reader) and they gave me 1693.

the print out he gave me lists makers ODBII, Hyundai, GM, VW, and Kia, but no Dodge.

ODBII says turbo charge control circuit malfunction.

could someone verify this for me, or set me straight on what a 1693 is?

while searching i found it is a companian code, so i am going to check all the pump CM and ECM connections.

This morning I tried an experiment… As the RPMs were coming up (driving about 10 MPH) I quickly let off of the accelerator pedal and then got back on it again and the engine suddenly had what seemed like full power. Then a minute later after I was already in traffic, (45 mph speed limit) it seemed to drop out from under me. I feathered the throttle and it just lugged along for about 30 seconds then came back to what seemed like full power.

I did a search for the MAP and even found a picture, but still cant find it on my engine (sorry for such a noob question) can someone point me to the info on testing the MAP sensor and where it is? Does this sound like what it could be?

Is there another way of testing my APPS other than trading it out with another one? I found a gun in my Jeep club that will trade with me, but the logistics are rough.

Thanks again for your help.

Ben

Sounds like the VP by what you described in the last post. You can check the pot with an VOM, don't know what the readings should be but should be linear with no spasms.

Godspeed,
Trent
