I went up to the cabin this weekend and after about in hour the truck would act like its falling on its face. no power at all. It seems to only do it at 55-65 mph (mostly 58-62) and 5-10 psi boost. If i floor it, it seem like its flooding out and some times it clears out and some times not. The only thing that i have done to it lately is change the fuel filter about 250 miles a go.

Question #2 if you guys have your truck in park and you rev up your rpms to 1400-2000 does your truck act like its running out of fuel, farting or studdering really bad and smokes a lot? It wont build up over 2200 rpms. Could this be a bad lift pump???

Any info would be great.

Ditto!

I have in my fleet two CTD that have the same simptoms, I have had them both over to the dealer no luck, also to Cummins Southern plains, they installed a 600. 00 apps on there and no luck same problem, the forman called and wanted to put on a new vp44 and i told him go ahead but if it wasn't the problem we wouldn't pay, after another day they decided that it wasn't that and that we should run it until the problem would stay so they could find it. so we are driveing it until it has to be wreckerd in. as soon as it goes titts up we will be able to find it then. I kinda hope we find this before my dulley start's haveing this problem:rolleyes: Good luck and if we have any luck ill be sure and share,Harv

Check your codes on the odometer. I had similar symptoms and it was a bad injection pump. Same deal rev up in park and it would act like a gasser that was flooding. Cycle key on-off three times and see if any codes come up on the odometer. I bet you see a 1693 and a 0216, which is Injection pump timing failure. I hate to seem like I am giving you a bunch of bad news, but this was my experience. Hopefully it isn't the pump, but look on the bright side, if it is your problem is solved.

I agree with jman. Same symptoms, same codes, etc. I've also been in denial replacing cam position sensor, resetting APPS, swapped out Edge comp, replaced fuel system relay... . cleared codes 20 plus times... ...

July 7th Piers installs new VP44.

OK guys, now what killed your VP44? I trust everyone has been watching their fuel pressure. Especially on the fleet CTD's.

Evil Lift Pumps... .

Mine didnt have a problem in park but just on long steep downhills (same codes). DC is replacing pump tommorrow.

Sticks:

Lift pump went out several months ago but never did totally die just low pressure during wot (2psi, it slowly dropped over time to that) was like this for a couple months before it got replaced. I don't race from light to light or anything so my wot runs are few and far between. Since it was replaced fp has been great 15psi idle and 10psi wot.

The 1693 shouldn't be the only code. Did you wait long enough for the other codes to come up. I didn't tell the whole story on mine either. I also had the same symptoms as BarryG going downhill it would start sputtering and smoking. Try the key thing again and give it time to complete the procedure. When it is done your mileage will reappear in the window. I am still convinced a bad batch of VP-44's made it out because yours, BarryG and mine are all 01's. Mine sits in a garage, plugged in all winter with warm up and cool down time and stanadyne every other fill up. I also have a FP gauge and FP has always been perfect. What more can you do to protect the stupid things. Hope you find the problem and get it fixed without to much of a headache.

Evil Lift Pumps... .
sticks until i joined the TDR and got started reading the post i wasn't aware of the problem, all of the trucks get the pump pressure checked at every oil change now the boss don't want to spring for fuel pressure guages in every truck, and yes this truck ran for i don't know how long with zero pump pressure before i learned. we aren't getting to codes that flag the vp44, today the scaner @ cummins showed the truck was running 200 mph @ 60mph now cummins says to take it back to the dealer to fix for it is a Dodge problem in the ecm. It will be there at sunup to get to the bottom of this, i dont realy have the equipment or the time to work on it but it will be interesting to see the out come Harv

Every brand of truck has a nasty issue or two. Fortunately ours are easy to get control of. At least your fleet trucks are getting checked now. You can't fault your boss for not wanting to invest more $$$ in them. At least he did'nt buy Ford 6. 0's.

BarryG - Hey, nice to see you again. I was unaware that you had a recent LP/VP44 problem. Either the bad batch on the '01

s, or there is a point that the VP44 does not like to operate with less than "X" psi at normal operating speeds.

Today i also seen that when it hesitates the turbo DOES NOT spool up. The turbo temp is also high, 600-650 at 70mph normal is about 500 before. My boost don't seem to hold all the way through the acceleration. When i floor it, it goes to 19 then 20 but when it shifts it drops to 16 and slow go's back up to 20.

I checked the codes again and i now have the 0216 code and the truck is at the dealer but they are saying maybe its the injection pump, or lift pump but unsure untill they can dig into a little more.

What do you guys think? Any info would be great...

thanks

I just had my VP44 replaced today @ 36k. 2002 6 speed, white smoke, no power, ran hot, no boost at light throttle, etc. Its much better now.

For what its worth... ... ... the Cummins shop here in our relatively small city had 3 trucks identical to mine (mine was the only one with any mods) in for the same problem. They had the same symptoms as mine. They also warranteed everything! It does pay to buy local:)

Matt

I had a similiar problem, very intermittent, dead spot in the throttle. Turned out the injection pump had a timing problem and the dealer relaced it at about 80,000 miles.

Dealer replaced yesterday. Seems the vp44 is having a rash of failures as of late. Hopefully I will never see 0216 again.

The stealer called and told me that it is the lift pump and they will warranty it this time but they know there was a after market fuel box on the truck so next time it will be out of mine own pocket. I played dumb I asked them whats that, they said the 5star warranty place said with all the info my stealer gave them there is a some type of after market fuel box and those VOID the warranty. I want to know how they know i have this edge ez box. Edge says it was undectiable... Anyone else have this problem?

Please refrain from the generic use of the word, "stealer" on the TDR website. Feel free, however, to post detailed information about good - as well as bad - experiences with any dealership.

Silverram,

They can probably see the connections are clean at the Data link and MAP sensor. When you unplug your EZ you clean all the dirt and grime off the connectors. I had this same problem with a dealer here but I played dumb and got it out of there before I lost my warranty. They velcro is a good clue also.

Well the dealer said it was the fuel (transfer) pump and replaced it. But they put this on my file now. DRB checked codes for inj pump timing, ect volt, 216, 217, 117. contacted star and ordered the pump and star suspects of engine enhancing devices on truck. No warranty on inj pump...

This sucks... Does the ez really hurt our trucks inj pump???

Now that i had a lift pump failure i am interested in putting on a pusher pump also. I was wondering what kind of pumps you guys are using and maybe some pics and info about it.
