this morning when i was driving my truck it felt like i tapped the throttle but i did not i was steady on it and it did it again and looked at gauges and tach was dead eveything else was good but check engine light was on it happened a few more times then quit acting up,when i drove it later it ran fine but light was still on turned the key and had code p 1693 thats all, any sugestions on what might be wrong?

I had the same problem on my 2k, turned out to be the camshaft position sensor, located above the power steering pump. The cummins part # is 4002066, price was around 35 if I remember right. good luck .

ok thanks guys for the help, any way to check the sensors before you take them out?i think it was just moisture because it only happened one time and is fine now, but if it does it again i will have to check it out further.

I could have sworn that Y2K's only had a crankshaft sensor... no camshaft sensor... . I could be wrong.

I know that on my Y2K... the dead tach and surging was the crankshaft sensor... it is right above the starter.

Think the part was around $40 from Cummins...

No good way to check them but you may be able to get away with cleaning the connections and having it work good again. Mine was acting up and between trying to disconnect and reconnect the connection the problem has straightened out.
