My problem started with no right turn signal in the trailer plug then progressed to no power to the brake control and now I have no power in the trailer plug at all also some times when I turn on the right turn signal the left one blinks. I talked to the service manager at the local dealership... said it was probably the IPM that cost $1,320 plus labor. He can’t tell me how to keep this from happening again. Does anyone have a better solution ? Is there any way to fool proof the new part from burning up again?

Once you have replaced the oem TIPM with an after market rebuilt one from Dorman (price only $595...half the cost of a stealer ship) then you will have to also to make or buy a kit that uses the trailer plug wiring, which is operated and poorly protect4ed by the TIPM, to to activate and run several 12v relays that will provide actual power that comes from a separate protected circuit that you need to run from the battery itself. Its NOT as difficult as its sounds, and is an excellent way to protect your new TIPM investment against future failure.

Motorhead, a member here, built a "TIPM saver" module that was pretty much plug n play for our trucks, but he did not go into full scale procdicuton due to liability concerns, If you contact him by PM, I am sure that he could help you understand how to do this.

All that being said, you need to know that 2006 and newer trucks use a TIPM and pre 2006 trucks use a PDC/IPM which is more like a regular fuse box.

Your turn signal issue MIGHT simply be the multi function switch failing, which is ANOTHER fairly common problem on these trucks.

So WHAT year truck do you have??

Well then my first post applies to your situation and very possibly you need a new or rebuilt TIPM if the dealer is unable to reset it using their scan tool. It is ALSO possible that your turn signal confusion is due to a failing multi function switch.

If you cannot find a stock or aftermarket replacement except the overly expensive one at the dealership. you may also want to consider a reputable TIPM rebuild service.

Please note that I have NOT used the one below, Circuit Board Medics, they have over 500 very positive reviews on Google and claim to have a 1 day turnaround time on the repair after receiving it and offer a 1 year no hassle warranty on the repaired unit.

If you want your tipm problems solved call MAK’s tipm repair service in California. They repaired mine and had it back to me in 9 days. Dealer wanted $1500 + and told me they would have to do the repairs. I removed and reinstalled myself followed the directions they sent me to do the soft start and all the issues were resolved. Only cost me $275.

Hmm... Not sure I understand your problem completely, given how other items failed in time. But, I had a similar problem last spring while passing through Texas. The lights on my travel trailer became intermittent, then failed completely. I found a competent technician nearby who arrived soon after my call, diagnosed the system and discovered the bumper mounted plug had worked it's way loose. Apparently, after re-installing a newly straightened, and re-plated rear bumper, I had failed to thoroughly secure the plug within the bumper cutout. A small tab which secures the plug to the bumper, had popped loose. He popped it back in and we were good to go through the subsequent rainstorm. Should I ever have this problem again, I now know where to look for a possible answer. Perhaps this information is irrelevant to your problem, but I hope it's useful, nonetheless.
