i have a couple of 96 dodge cummins' and was wondering what the general consensus was on the 04/05 cummins.

keep in mind, i really like the 12V and it's simplicity. i don't have to run them to the dealer every time something goes wrong with them. i. e. not beholden to the computer inside.

my 04 powerstroke has been in the shop quite a bit and i am looking to go back to dodge for my daily truck. i do like the ford crew cab. dodge's crew cab seems smaller. is this the case?

thanks. scott.

There's no question the Dodge crew cab is smaller. If your going to have 2-3 full size adults in the back seat, with 2 full size adults in the front who are going to have their seats all the way back, and if your going to be taking all of these large adults to an all-you-can-eat contests 500 miles away, go with Ford or Chevy. I came from a 2002 GMC 2500HD Crew cab, and the back seats are super comfortable and plenty of size (the Super Duty's are just as roomy). I was concerned with the smaller cab size too, but it's been fine so far. I only occasionally haul more than 2 people around, and if there is more of us we always seem to make it work. For example, if two couples go, then put the ladies in the back and men in front.

I really like the fold flat storage option on the dodge (if you get a new ride, make sure it has this option). There are little cavities to store stuff under there too that hold a lot of crap (I've got impact wrenches, a cordless drill, volt-ohm meter, roll of paper towels, and a 12 ga under this).

As for simplicity, your right... there isn't too much I can fix on this thing. My first pickup was an '82 Dodge with the imfamous "leaning tower of power" and there wasn't anything that I couldn't fix on her, but the problem was is that I WAS fixing it all the time.

I think that in the end, you'll be very impressed with the refiniments in cab quality and overall quality the 3rd gens have.

The Quad cab is adequate. I am 6’1” tall, 175 pounds. With the drivers seat adjusted to where I feel comfortable driving, I can sit in back seat and my knees will just touch the back for the front seat. The back seat is not roomy, but it is fine for short trips, and fine for shorter people. I would not suggest the back for anyone much taller or heavier than I am, because your head will probably touch the roof, but if you need to seat a large person in the back, there is more headroom in the rear middle seat. The Ford crew cab has a lot more room in the back, but it so much longer than the Dodge that it was a deterrent for us, you need a stadium parking lot to perform a u-turn in a Ford crew cab. My wife and I went round and round choosing a new pickup, it was a 2 year long process. My suggestion to you is to go to a large auto show. We made the choice to buy the Dodge in December of 2003, at the San Diego Auto Show. It was the perfect place to shop; we were able to play around in all of the big three’s pickups, one right after the other, take photos, and compare. We could not be happier with ours so far, it has an incredible amount of power, it is quiet, and the fit and finish on everything is very good. Another thing that has been great about the quad cab with the fold flat rear storage is that it is absolutely perfect for a dog. Overall I think Dodge did a great job with the size of the Quad cab, it is big enough to be practical, but no so huge that it is a PITA.

Scott Scott Scott,

You bought a Ford, SHAME ON YOU!!!

Go ahead get another Cummins...

My new one is great, no complaints.

The Dodge crew is a little smaller, but still has plenty of room for full size adults.

Have you test drove one yet?

Another . 02 worth. If you get the Dodge, be sure to drive it on the highway before you plunk down your money. That vibration at 70 mph is nasty. Mine with 2900 Miles on it is at the dealer now. DC sent down an expert from HQ to deal with mine and one other. The owner of the other (both 3500's, SRW) has started the Lemon Law by back procedure and has a hearing scheduled. They have worked on his a few times unsuccessfully. Still, i would buy another but would test drive on Hwy first.

I've heard several of you talking about this vibration. Is it something you feel through the whole truck, just in the steering wheel, in the shifter (for those that have a 6spd). I have a slight vibration in the shifter at some speeds, but nothing that I *think* I should be concerned about.

I have the 3500 SRW and have never noticed any vibration at any speed, whether towing or solo. Is it something that may be on the earlier made models or have I just been lucky?

My new 04. 5 has been flawless. Got it in early march and have had no complaints at all. There is one thing that you may notice when you make the switch from a 2gen. The truck is so QUIET you may notice some things you did not before. I can hear tire and 1st gear noise in the new truck. The engine was so loud in my 01-02s that they drownded out any trans noise there may have been. The fit and finish is very good and there is excellent wind noise controll in the 3gens. Take a chance. You will be happy. IMHO

My opinion of the DC 4dr is that I personaly should have bought a regular cab with a long box. I didnt really need the 4 doors but I previously had the extended cab and liked the extra room. BUT since they shortened the short box to make more cab I wish i would have got the long box with 2 doors and spent the saved money on a canopy or nice tool box. Main problem is that I cant fit anything in this short box.

No vibes and anyone that has ridden in the back seat of my QC has praised it. I use the fold-down floor all the time and the shorter wb of the QC vs. Crew Cab is a consideration. Unless I were taking really big people on very long trips, I would not even consider getting a Crew Cab.
