While picking up a couple parts today at one of the local dealers I found out they always use 12 quarts of oil for an oil change on a Cummins.

Aside from the issue of whether you can add 12 quarts or not safely, I'm amazed they cannot even attempt to follow the 11 quarts outlined everywhere else like the owners manual, service manual, and Cummins. This is why I don't go to the dealer. That and there is always something that is broken when I get my truck back that wasn't broken when it went in.

I use the 11 quarts plus filling the oil filter and it comes out so close that the 12 quarts total shows at just about perfect on the stick, so that is our experience.

I've used 12 qts for the last 300k on my rigs, never a problem.

Comes out just a little over the full mark, no big deal.

I'm not saying it is good or bad, obviously it is fine, but I was just *****ing about how the dealer can't follow directions. That should come as no surprise though.

In 5 years of changing my oil in my 98. 5 24V, i only used 12 quarts once. And immediately got a leak out the rear seal. I drained it off and the leak stopped. Just follow the owner's manual is my advice.

And mega dittos on the dealers, I dont trust them for routine stuff as think about who gets that detail, the young kids. I dont let 20 something kids mess with my rig. As for warrantee work, I have no problems with Greg Reardon Dodge at Smokey Point Washington, but the pack of car salesman always makes me laugh, they look just like vultures.
