I had a customer take his 2016 5500 in to our local dealer because the check engine light was on. I forget the fault code exactly but it had a description that said something about regen too frequent. The truck gets worked pretty hard locally with decent highway time but does end up idling on a jobsite sometimes. Anyhow local dealer basically told him that he was having issues because it has aftermarket(fleetguard) filters on it. 60,000 miles on the truck and they have been changed at least twice and are currently due again according to truck EVIC. He was basically told that for them to warranty anything in the aftertreatment system he had to run mopar filters and were even trying to convince him he needed to buy their oil because the ash content could be too high in other oils and cause dpf issues. Is mopar oil Valvoline premium blue extreme because that's what comes in the from the factory? Their theory on the fuel filters was that they were letting too much contaminants through and plugging the dpf. If that was the case wouldn't they be telling him the injectors need replaced? So they sold him $200 worth of filters(no oil)and he is coming here for an oil change later today. I had cleared this code once and it came back within a couple days. He was told if he started running their filters he most likely would not have any problems. They also updated the ecm so I wonder if the updates will affect this code at all. They still acted like they would warranty stuff if the mopar filters were used. Has anyone heard any story like this before? My customer wasn't buying it either.

The mopar fuel filters say fleetguard on them!

He should ask them to pull out a mopar fuel filter and point out the fact that mopar does not make their own filters. Point to the fleetguard emblem on the mopar filter!

It would be nice if when we all had problems like this that we named the dealer and location. May keep other away from the place of business.

Horse Puckies!!!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson–Moss_Warranty_Act

This statement in particular...

"Warrantors cannot require that only branded parts be used with the product in order to retain the warranty.[7] This is commonly referred to as the "tie-in sales" provisions[8] and is frequently mentioned in the context of third-party computer parts, such as memory and hard drives."

As soon as I saw the title, I knew this was coming, Magnuson-Moss. Mike, he's on the ball.

Horse Puckies! Was that Col. Potter on MASH?

They should have been more concerned that it only had two filter changes in 60k over what brand of filter even if it was a Fleetguard.
I know they will deny for not changing the filters, and the ECM shows miles since last filter reset.

That would a more valid concern than the filter brand......

OEM's now try to circumvent that law by inventing and placing a patent on the thread pitch of the filter head, I have seen that several times. Eventually the patent will expire and then the aftermarket can have at it but it buys the OEM some exclusivity for a while.

by any chance is the dealer located in a state with legal weed? sounds like they have smoked way too much. cheers comrades!
Illinois. It does not become legal until Jan 1. I am sure all the people that voted for it haven’t tried it yet.

I need to check my records but I have to think it’s been changed 3 times and this will be the fourth time. He pretty much goes by the evic monitor. How often do you recommend? That would be every 15,000 miles.

Yeah, Colorado is now one whacked out state. I have to look at the route we are going to take when we leave Minot to go to Az. I would definately like to avoid Colorado.
