Old Airstream Trailers

The dealer where I bought my truck says that they can perform the TSB that lowers the back end of the truck for towing a 5er under warranty. I'd really like to do it, but would appreciate any advise from anyone who has had this done. He said I could keep the parts that come off in case I ever wanted to switch it back or sell the truck.

I'd appreciate a chance to acutally see the TSB, if anyone has access to it.

'Under warranty' is right the opposite what my dealer told me.

They told me that the truck was built that way for a purpose and I would have to pay about $900 to have the work done.

LOWERING 4x4

If I could get that baby lowered under warranty,I'd go for it. I think he's pulling your leg. I'd like to get mine lowered, just can't find much info on the subject as of late!! Any help out there??

I got the same treatment as Jumbo Jet at the dealer. Told me around $1000 to do the job. Decided to go with a flatbed instead, I now have 18" clearance between the bed and trailer.

I've seen guys with 2wd's that still crunched down the back of their box from lack of clearance with 5th wheel trailers.

If your dealer is willing to do it under warrany, I'd jump on it before they change their mind.

Update:

I called the dealer again today to verify warranty for the TSB. They confirmed it would be covered under warranty. I scheduled it in for next Tuesday. I'll post the results after I get it back. I asked if I could keep the parts to undo the mod if I ever sell the truck. They think that's OK.

I lowered my 2500 with that kit and i took it back

up because of the way it looked. I got the kit

used, way over priced when new. 4 U bolts w/ nuts,

2 shocks,2 blocks and 2 height senser rods which

you don,t need on the new truck.

The kit lowers the bed 1 7/8 inches at the axle

but it ends up more at the rear of the truck.

I got a 4x4 and i didn,t like the way it looked.

Have a good one

Frank:

What is the function of the 2 height senser rods you mentioned?

I don't mind the look of a lower truck, as long as it looks balanced. I wouldn't want it to look like it's overloaded just going down the street empty. From what I can tell, the 1 7/8" drop at the rear axle still puts it higher than level when empty. I'm hoping that the kit will split the difference between loaded and empty. i. e. a little high when empty and maybe the same amount low when the 5er is hitched up. I don't plan on doing any serious off road traveling, so ground clearance is not an issue, and for the most part ground clearance at the rear diff. doesn't change anyway. I really like the idea of the lower tailgate height for loading and unloading. From what I can tell, the tailgate height in the down position should be about 3" lower than now. Is this about what you saw?

Thanks for your input.

Ken

Hi Ken

Sorry it took so long to get back top you.

3 inches at the tailgate is about right. It was level

without anything on the truck but any wieght at

all made it look over loaded.

I took mine back up 1 inch ,that ,s about right

for me.

The rods are hieght sensers to tell the brakes

how much of a load you have on so the right amount

brake can be applied. I don,t think their used on the

disk brakes. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the updates; keep 'em coming! I'm interested in this, myself.

Looks as if they removed the overload spring, and installed new shocks. Is that right?

I look forward to the with and without trailer pictures.

Jim

The front end height is not changed. As delivered from the factory, the back end is several inches high, and the TSB brings it closer to level. I did have the camper special. The overload springs are gone, but the rear anti-sway bar remained.

My complements to Boradway Dodge for their effort in getting this done. They have provided very good service to me, including free oil changes.

Edit: I have added some before and after pics with and without the camper attached on my website. Click here to see my web page.

My dealer said no to it being under warranty and a call ( read: heated conversation ) to DC confirmed it is NOT warranty, those who have had it done, I'm jealous... So much for buying 5 (yes, five) Dodge trucks in a row, guess it's OK for me to be brand loyal but they dont have be loyal back.

Ford 1, Dodge 0

Sorry to hear that Tex! Seems I heard a while back that if you took your Ford 4X4 back to the dealer and told them it was too tall for your 5er, they installed a lowering kit, no hastle, NO CHARGE. The article said Ford just wanted to keep their truck buyers happy. Oh well  BTW, great post klenger!!!
