Some of you may remember the little tale ofhow my truck was muddied up during a test drive last time. You may also remember that the service manager was good as far as getting the prescribed work done.

Well, the truck was back in their care today, for an alignment and to fix a cluck in the front end.

I arrived to check on the truck and found that the alignment was done, "But its not acceptable. Its better, but not fixed, its going back to them as soon as you can allow us to do it. " Wow.

And I found exactly that as I drove the truck for the service writer on a test drive to find the clucnk, since they were unable to duplicate it, "but let me send Chuck with ya, I want this thing fixed. If you say there is a clunk, there is a clunk. " And yes, he felt the clunk, and it's going back day after tomorrow.

Now, I also found out that Chrysler kinda ____'s these guys. See, if they order a part they might need, but don't, Mopar makes em pay a restocking fee. Or they have to eat the inventory cost. But DC and the customer want the truck fixed in one day.

You have a dealer like Valley Dodge in Helena, Mt. Don't be too concerned about them having to return or stock an unused item. Their service attitude will more than pay for the added cost simply by attracting customers! Sure is good to have good service oriented dealers, isn't it!

Just annoys me that my dealer is trying to do their best for me, make good marks on the 5 Star system, and DC doesn't seem to want to help the process.

I was glad they came out and said that the truck was not right, beats having to discover that myself.

Phil Johnson,

Are you reading this thread? Some dealers should be arrested for owning tools and some, like these, really try to do a good job. And usually succeed. My dealer has always done a good job and has a top notch parts department.

Max,I hope it works out for you. My truck goes in again for the 7th time for a howl/whine diagnosis. Read my post in the 24v section on 01 whine. My being reasonable will end tomorrow. LOL

Got truck back today from second attempt at lining it up. When I arrived at the dealer, Sevice manage said they got the annoying tap out of the front end (dunno what it was, the tech left before he could be quizzed at 4 pm).

Downside is, the service dept spent close to an hour (20 minutes of it with me there) on the phone with "Detroit" about the wander my truck has. I drove it and it seems vague, but not terrible and certainly not wandering with mind of its own, but its not the "feel the road" thing I like. Seems I am gonna get a new steering box. The part is on order, and will be in next week. Parts guy says its a number thats not even in his books.

Interesting note: Service manager was surprised to find that I could supply him with a specification and the reason for the spec on the alignment that might help the truck. Seemed interested in the fact that this "steering thing" is fairly widespread, and that I knew of the possible problems before hand.

Question: Anyone have the PN for the new steering boxes? I know I saw it posted on here somewhere, but cannot find it in a search.

It's great, I have not one, but TWO, dealers who give me that kind of serivice. What an incredible difference from Ford.

Max 340 Glad to hear that you have a good working relationship with your dealer. I looked in my truck and on the website and found the p/n its P52113500AF, and the Box is manufactured by DELPHI, not Saginaw. I believe that the critical designation for the Delphi box is the Letters AF. My Ram steers solid, with no slop or play. It's steering is much more positive then the 96's and 97's that I use at work. Do A search of the sight using "Delphi" as a key word. Lots of info for the past month.

Max 340:
Have you checked your tire pressures? After a new track bar and steering box, mine was better, but still wandered. After correcting the tire pressures (I think the dealer set them too high one of the times it was in for steering work), it doesn't wander like it did, and It finally steers like it should. By the way, I now have the Delphi AF box.

TIre pressures were checked, and the tires rotated, so I think they eliminated those as a cause.

The PN I have on the steering box is 52113500AE

Wonder what that is, if the Delphi box is AF.

AE could also be a Delphi box, but it would be an earlier model. I know that they keep changing them, and AF was the latest model a couple of months ago (and maybe still is). Delphi is cast on the top of the box on mine. It's clear they have been changing them to find one that works right.
