I took my truck in a while back with 98k miles on it for an oil leak. They gave me the runaround how it was just oil dripping from the oil filter oil catch pan. I went through the whole oil change process with them using a ziplock bag etc no way was it that. Yes I am sure that a couple drops of oil fall out of the filter head when changing the filter but no way is there enough to cause the amount of oil dripping I am seeing. Not to mention it is on the front of the engine down low and is obvious it is not coming from the filter head. In fact I insisted that they keep it another day and have someone else ie different mechanic look at it to get a second opinion, the service writer was not all that happy with that request but he said ok. Same thing the next day. I was unhappy and second guessing myself about the true cause of the oil drip. However could not spend any more time dealing with it due to work and the holidays the following week.

Fast forward a few weeks the leak is now definitely worse. So I go back up there and talk to the service manager (truck now has 106k on it, well past the warranty mileage). I am nice and respectful with him, To my complete and utter surprise there was no wishy washy, double talk, or over warranty talk at all. He pulled up the invoice asked me some questions and said he had a fair amount of leeway at least at the moment and when would I like to bring it in. And here I was prepared to go bonkers on them.

I take it in and sure enough they diagnose two oil leaks one from the front crank seal and another one from the rear timing cover. While I did not suspect two leaks I did suspect it was one of the timing covers or the crank seal. The mechanic calls me and tells me it will be $1800 to repair. I ask how come we aren't talking about warranty work here had he talked with the service manager. He had not but said he would. I got a call about 10 minutes later from the service manager saying there was a breakdown in communication and that it would be covered. He said it will take a couple days as it is an involved job.

While this is the outcome it should have been and I was prepared to go as far as it took to get it resolved that way I was still surprised at the ease and total lack on my part of needing to be an arse about it. So while this particular dealer has never been great to me over the last 25 years just your typical run of the mill corporate chain owned dealership they did step up and since we hear so many bad things about them (dealers and service in particular in general) I felt it appropriate to write a positive thread about at least one time.

It is always good to get reports like this. I have used 3 different dealers in our area (100 mile radius) only because of my travels. But I have had some good,, some bad..they have been good at recalls, just OK on service (I do my on oil changes with using Zip Lock Bag too), they always seem to forget to lube the ONE U Joint on the transfer case. Knock on wood nothing that has required warranty work. Yet!

Last year I was developing a crank seal leak. I also had a leak between the transfer case and transmission that was very small but there since nearly new. I had several recalls and the seals done. The Mechanic was AWESOME he has 18 years experience and is their Diesel expert. He said he would replace BOTH trans and transfer seals since it will be apart. Crystal Chrysler in Cathedral City, CA.

Notice the oil drips on the concrete in front of the AWESOME rental car they gave me.

If problem was reported prior to warranty expiration, it is supposed to be covered even if the actual repair is outside the warranty period. You had history there so good to see they did what they were supposed to do.

Well hopefully I didn't jump the gun on posting this morning. Got a call earlier today from the Service manager. Said Chrysler is pushing back on it since it had a programmer on it. He is fighting like heck for me though, according to him. Well good since it has never ever had a programmer on it so no idea where the heck that is coming from. Haven't heard back from him so maybe that is good news. Waiting to see and keeping my temper in check.

Did you buy the truck new or used?

If the dealer has good warranty numbers they can just do it and submit for payment. If not they have to get it approved first. The only way they know it is/was modified is if the dealer said something.

Or if the truck had been connected to witech at sometime.

Bought the truck new so no previous owner

Only people who have worked on the truck beside me is the selling dealer doing whatever it is they do to sell the vehicle, discount tire x 2 for new tires, les Schwab for an alignment and this dealer for the recalls(water pump, tailgate, track bar, ignition interlock) that have happened since I bought the truck and the visit a few weeks ago for this oil leak and now this time. I have never even entertained the idea of programmer on this truck. Pretty much got that out of my system with the previous 01. It does however have an edge cts2 monitor in it but as you know it is not nor ever will be or has been a programmer

A few years ago at May Madness Chrysler was VERY clear they were tired of paying for repairs on modified trucks. All programmers leave a trail on there new trucks.

OP you need to explain to the Service Manager that it's NOT a programmer and all should be well.

Ok I stopped by the dealer on the way home since I only work a couple blocks from it. Talked to the service manager. Here is what he told me. He did get Chrysler to approve the work. He said that when they do warranty work past the warranty period they have to get approval and part of that is they have to send them a picture of the cluster and my CTS2 showed in the picture hence their denial thinking it was a programmer and the service managers call the other day. After talking with him on Friday I had not heard back from him. He said he Called Chrysler and they required a copy of my truck computer file to verify no programmer. Apparently they were satisfied as he told me they are covering it and my truck was in fact in a bay being worked on. So again so far so good and kudos to them for stepping up and doing what they should have done. While there has been a bit more hassle than original I can certainly live with it to get this done.
