I started having problems in the mountains. I was on a long trip and I lost power going down hill and the truck was smoking badly. The first thing I did was change the fuel filter. No change. I talked with a diesel mechanic in Summit County and he traced it down to a bad injector on the #1 cyl.

So I get back to Denver and take it to Dodge. I give them the full detail of what was done to come to this conclusion and the conclusion.

Now they tell me I need a new transfer pump and a new injector pump. Both are warranty items, so let's get them fixed.

Now comes the part I really don't understand. While talking to the service guy, he tells me that my truck doesn't have a lift pump. That's Fords and Chevy's. We have transfer pumps. He then tells me that we don't have a fuel pump either.  I asked him what the VP44 was and he (naturally) didn't know.

Does anyone have any clue what he is talking about?

I'm going back today (had to wait for a part) to get the truck. I'm going to try to find out what they really replaced.

Hey Scott- My dealer also refers to it as a transfer pump. He said it is the same as what we call a lift pump. I am curious as to whom you spoke with up here. Did you have a good rapport with him as to his knowledge of our trucks. I would not mind having someone local to deal with on more than just maintenance matters. BTW- what dealer were/ are you taking your truck to? -frank

Scott,

In diesel terms the small electrical pump that keeps going out on people is the transfer pump (aka lift pump). The VP44 in diesel terms is a fuel pump (aka injection pump).

Kevin

The Mopar parts book uses "PUMP, Fuel" and "PUMP, Fuel Injection" for the two pumps.

The factory service manual uses "fuel transfer pump (fuel lift pump)" and "fuel injection pump" to describe the same two items.

Well, I finally called and got to talk to the shop foreman. He actually had a clue and, as you guys said, I now have a new lift pump and a new VP44. He said that the difference between a lift pump and a transfer pump is mechanical/ electric. Otherwise they have the same function.

Frank,

I went to Cherry Creek Lithia Dodge (used to be dealin' Doug). The shop foreman and the techs seem ok, but you have to deal with the not so bright, self-important individuals that are called "service consultants".  I don't think I'll be going back there. #@$%!

Up in Summit County, Hickey motors seems ok. The guy I talked with is Bill at Summit Mobile. They are the go out on the road and fix semis type of diesel guys. He knows Cummins very well, but not the small ones as much as the big ones. I don't have his number on me, but they are in the phone book. Their shop is on 3rd St. in Silverthorne.

There are at least 6 diffrent names for every part on the truck. The service manual uses 1 the diagnostics book uses a 2nd STAR uses a 3rd parts uses a 4th the tech uses a 5th then there is the incompresensible name and description used by the service writer when he tells the customer.

I realy wish they would publish a cross refrence for all the names.
