i got a call from the dealer from whom i bought my 2001. 5. he asked me several questions about my ride including milage, the condition, what i liked and didnt like. he then insisted that i make an appointment for an appraisal. He indicated an offer better than market value would be extended to go towards a new truck. I have never heard of anything like this before. Of course i am very skeptical and have no intentions of selling my truck. However, I am wondering if anyone has heard of such an offer before and might know what they are up to. :--)

Sounds like it's time for the dealer to move some new stock off his lot! I have seen this before in mail-ads from the dealer, but hadn't heard of them call before. It's trade-in incentives to get you to buy a new truck, that's all.

Even at wholesale auctions these trucks are bringing big money, close to retail pricing, so if the guy gives you a couple grand over book and then sells it for book and you pay sticker he still makes off with 4 to 6 grand.

A guy I know had the same thing happen with his Grand Caravan recently-it's in mint shape, low miles, and I would suspect that either (possibly both) scenarios previously mentioned might be the case-need to move new stock and/or guy wants to buy it...

when ever you buy any vehicle,

NEVER, EVER include the trade as part of the deal for the new vehicle. make the deal on the new vehicle first, and by itself. then afterwards you can say "oh by the way" what would you give me for this vehicle on trade?

they hate this tactic because they like to make you happy by giving you top dollar on your trade and then sticking you with near sticker on the new vehicle. you end up paying more in taxes this way. the actual out of pocket is always more this way.

and yes - he might be trying to unload excess inventory, so have him write you a deal on a "potential" new vehicle without letting him know what you might trade.

Lil inside info.....

Just to start out..... Before I moved back here to Utah I was living in Portland and worked at Gresham Dodge. I actually sold some trucks to guys who are members here. Anyway, I got out of it because I didn't really agree with some of the tactics some salesman were using. Don't get me wrong the management and owner were top notch in my eyes, but it just wasn't for me.

Back to the topic. When you buy your truck your name is put into a database and that database is printed out with your name and number and what you have as a vehicle, along with address and a couple other things. That is why they called you. A salesman or sales manager looked at your name and said to themselves that this guy has a couple year old truck... . whatever the case may be, we'll see if we can get him interested in a new truck. They really don't care what condition its in or the mileage or anything else. It's just a ploy to get you in the door to feel you out and see if you are really interested. Yo uget flyers saying there is a need for vehicles JUST like yours or a call saying that you have been selected or something that sounds good and gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling, but its just a sales tactic. I hated doing it. Anyway I will step down... ... . Russ

I have heard of this practice before, but it is still very odd and unusual. The dealer I ordered my truck thru never called but did the usual mail solicitation. When my wife bought one of her Dodges, that dealership was very interested in my truck and ask if I would mind them looking at it. I didn't and they went over it and even drove it. They ask if I would sell it, and I told them I was hear to buy a vehicle for my wife, and not myself. Any how, they have call a few times since, and asked if I'm ready to sell. Last December was the last time, and they called twice that month?

Dealer probably has someone looking for a truck similar to what you have. It's common practice for dealers. We're looking for a used car for my fiancee, and the dealer we know just through his files and contacted customers who had purchased cars similar to what we want and tried to convince them to come in and trade up so they could sell us the trade in.

Recent auction prices in PA:

01 2500 QC LB slt, diesel, stick, 40k miles very clean - $24,900

01 3500 QC diesel, auto, 72k miles - 22,600

03 2500 QC SB, SLT, sport, 35k miles, 28,500

I have no clue what they are going for in Utah, hope this helps.

Had the same thing happen to me the other day. Went in for service on trans and was hanging around when a sales person asked if I owned the truck and if I would like to sell it, no thanks, don't like what I'm reading about the 04s. Even if the 01. 5 have problems...

dealer list

Hi, I just got one better, offer from dodge. they will give what the dealer invoice was in 97 when mine was new as a trade in value on a new one in dealer stock. I don't know what list was back then, since I bought mine used, but guessing i'd say around 26,000. lets see, subtract mileage, and other things maybe 19,000 final figure, take that from the new 50,000 truck and I'm still at 31,000, OH my butt hurts, no thanks offer in trash. I'm keeping my baby. Ian:D

That just happened to one of my employees

One of my guys got an offer from Fairfield ford. Said that they'd give him what his car cost new less miles. They sold him a base model ford ranger 4 cyl, 5 speed 2 wheel drive plain jane truck for near 18,000 after figuring his trade.

I tried to talk him out of it, and even recommended at least getting a 4 wheel drive, possibly a dodgeram.

I feel that he got burned. But what is important is that he thinks he got a good deal.

Used Trucks = $$$

Like Truckstorm said someone is looking for a truck like you have.

I am a auto transporter and last week I transported a 2001. 5 3500 HO with leather and 19,000 miles on it to a dealer in NJ. He paid $29,000 at auction for this truck and had it sold to a guy in Vermont.

Now take the $29,000 + transport fees + the dealer fees and you would think the truck must have sold for over $32,000 This is for a used truck.

Just stmething to think about.
