Lift pump replaced truck is running fine. When I pulled the codes the fan speed code showed up. I wonder if the shutdown of the engine when the lift pump failed could have injured the fan clutch.

Here's what is going on:

Engine cold fan does not spin freely feels sluggish about 80 of the circle then loosens, but still had drag, when cycled by hand.

Fan locks up upon start then after a minute or so releases and rotation slows. Locks in when ac is switced on.

I'm thnking it's time for a clutch even though there is no bearing noise I believe when cold it should free-wheel when not running.

I wonder if the sudden shutdown (@ about 1500 rpm) could have hurt the bearings, or maybe it is coincidence.

If I need one which should I consider for quality dorman, hayden, four seasons?

Any other test I should consider before tossing $175 at it?

The cold operation part sounds normal. That codes indicates the computer thinks the fan is turning too slowly when it's engaged. So it's time for a new one.
Sorry, I can't help with a source.

No winter front, the temp was in low 30's last night when I checked for free-wheel of fan at cold engine. The shut-down occured at about 65* air temp with no ac running, so at freeway speed with 70 mph air-flow I don't expect the clutch was engaged.

At high 40's today, free-wheel feels about the same.

Today I took the truck out of town on a 100 mile trip, during the trip the codes cleared themselves. No more fuel, or fan speed code exists and the check engine on dash turned off. I suppose I can give the fan clutch some time to develop, I's working fine now.

Also, I found Hayden Automotive 3281 on amazon for $170, If I have continued problems I may go with that, rock auto, or possibly local.

The fan clutch never locks completely so even a shutdown at 3k rpm is unlikely to affect the clutch. The clutch is likely getting tired, sticky, and\or wore and intermittently does not function as the ECU thinks it should.
