It's a given that stock 48 rfe's are pretty strong and built 48 rfe's strength is far far stronger than stock BUT none of that addresses wide gaps in gearing.

What would it take in numbers of potential customers to make this project viable?

No doubt an expensive R&D outlay but Cummins aftermarket customers have a proven history of spending $$$$ on good products.

Since this could never be a couple guys working out of their garage project, what could we "the 5. 9 aftermarket" do to provide incentive to a single performance transmission shop or maybe even a "co-operative effort" via several performance transmission shops along with some of the performance software shops to all work together and R & D this.

Given many economic factors of fewer new rigs selling and hugh desire for 5. 9 ers to keep their rigs on the road, and all the spin off $$$$ that would go along with 5. 9's staying on the road long long past their Powerstroke and Duramax counterparts matched up year for year, it would seem there would be a long long run of return on investment.

So please Santa put a card in this years stocking stuffer teasing me that some old reindeer might one day be able to get 68 rfe retrofits.

My guess is the cost would be quite high. $10K+?? I would love that combo but since I just "built" my 48 I don't think I would do it. Might be easier to buy a 6. 7 and swap the motor:rolleyes:

No such animal, it's a 48RE. The new auto is a 68RFE, I'm not sure what the F stands for but someone else might know.

I agree a 6 speed auto would be great but very pricy. I've read that Suncoast was was working on a Allison trans swap for the Cummins Dodge a while back but I don't know if it ever got off the ground. Personally I would rather have the 68 RFE too and I'm sure someone somewhere will do it eventually, it's just a matter of time.

After I posted I went for a drive to get some vittles. I live on a major throughfare highway that has lots of traffic so normally I need to accelerate pretty briskly (besides I just loving to do it) and it occured to me that you don't really need all those gears if you got lots of power. I love my 48RE, oodles of aftermarket hi-po parts and super easy to build.

FE = Full Electronic control

Suncoast's conversion is $10k plus, not sure that is worth it for a suspect transmission.

Currently there just aren't any performance parts for th 68RFE other than maybe some beta converters. The rest of the internals will take a while to show up until the aftermarket figures out what is weak.

As fo a stand alone controller, well, the TQ Shift has been out how long and how many of those do you in swaps? A 3 pinion band actuated electronically controlled transmission with little or no aftermarket support, don't hold your breath. No going to be a race trans by any means and the rest of the niche market is way too small.

Bet hey, it would be a great swap to do. :)

well you could always call suncoast and get the built allison and adapter kit for the cummins... . kinda pricey tho. 10K or maybe 12?

They say De stroked.com has a adapter plate for a 48re to Allison swap, and all the electronics to make it work. To bad I just did my 48re

You care to substantiate your claim? We have people on this site who build trucks with LCT-1000s at Stage IV level for less than that, anyway. Plus, after you convert, you can sell the old transmission, especially if it's a G56. That knocks a min $2500 off the cost if you have a G56 swapping out.
