96 3500 dually 4x4 v8 diesel conversion???

rv 1st gen

I finally made some progress on the F350 lately, here are a few picks-

I am installing a '96 12 valve, NV4500 5-spd, 241 DHD transfer case, Dana 80 from a '97 3500, Ford dana 60 converted to factory dually, shackle reverse kit. I am about ready to set the engine after rebuilding it. Thats all for now, hopefully I can post more pictures as I make progress-Nicholas

Are you going to leave those Banks stickers on there?:-laf I can hear it now, "Those Banks trucks kick ***!" But seriously, I am still up in the air on what I am going to put my Doner engine in. First choice is a Ford crew cab 4X4. Thats going to be a very nice truck.

if i can make 1 suggestion it would be to invest the extra $$$ in the cross-over steering knuckle that will put the tie rod above the leaf springs. It will be the best money you will spend. Well aside from the CTD engine of course.

Thanks Rebel, No the banks stickers are defiantly going away, as the banks gauges already have. Gotta tell ya though, i sure was worried about the old e4od with all that power. It made a whopping 6psi of boost at full tilt. Plus the 6bt will probably put out more smoke than Gale likes.

Rob, whose kit did you use, or did you assemble the components yourself? As you can see I installed the reverse shackle kit already. I installed the reverse shackle kit on a customers truck, and couldn't believe the difference it made, so I had to install one on my truck.

I did make a little more progress, I got the engine set in the truck but I haven't got anymore pictures yet. -Nicholas

On my Dakota we had to install a mount in the front for the leaf springs so it acts like a reverse shackle kit. The high mount steering kit i got from Off-Road-Unlimited. Here is the link to the exact parts Ford Crossover Steering - Off Road Unlimited. If you have any questions please dont hesitate to PM me.

Rob

Also if you do decide to buy it from them do not but the tie rod from them it is way toooooo expensive and all you get is a modified (bent in a press) Moog tie rod end. I have the part Number if you need it.

Just think if it would of maxed out the 15psi gauge! It might have ripped that little gauge pod right off of the dash.

More progress

I made it a little further on the F350. I installed the engine a couple weekends ago, and bolted up the new south bend clutch and transmission tonight. Got a few more pics, ignore the nasty looking thermostat housing and valve covers, they were just put on so I could set the motor. -Nicholas

Don't mean to hijack your thread but i have 1 question. i have an '89 f250 460 with a 5 speed man. What Transmission would it be and would it bolt up/ survive behind a 6bt with about 350 to 400 horse?

Thank You

Curtis

BTW you're doing an awesome job, keep up the good work and please keep us updated with as many pic's as you can.

Curtis, The transmission in your truck, should be a ZF transmission. It probably will hold up to that horsepower level if driven with some finesse. If you are planning on pulling, or rippin' on it alot, I would probably consider something a little heavier. The biggest drawback I can see for an everyday driver, is the wide ratio gearing that is set up for the 460. The ZF for the diesels, have a ratio that is more suited for the diesels normal RPM range. As far it bolting up, it should, providing you use an adapter from someone like Destroked.com

Thanks for the compliments, I will try to get some more pics posted as soon as I get them, progress has been a little slow the past couple weeks, we have been trying to get ready for the Diesel Rally on Saturday. -Nicholas

Thank you for your help, i was affraid it would be the ZF trans. It would be more of a to and from work vehicle, with some occasional hauling. Doesn't sound like it would be a wise choice due to the gear ratio's.

Thanks again

Curtis

Details as promised ....Finally

What was the issue on the FC mounts im thinking really hard about buying a Ford Crew cab with or with out a Power Joke in it and transplanting my 92

over to it . I dont want no mickeymouse motor mounts , I want something that will bolt in the stock location and have room for the stock fan so if im on a trip i can buy parts off the shelf if something were to fail . If i dont buy a

PowerJoke with a manual transmission I was thinking about useing my NV4500 with the AA kit that i already have bolted to my 92 now then getting a 205 from a 70's F250 or F350 as im not shure about a chain driven t-case or buy one from HDGear etc . Any thoughts willbe appreciated . Thanks !!!!!!!!!

The Truck looks great !!!!!!!!!!!

Whats to gain on the shackel flip ? Im batteling a sag on my suburban , im thinking about either airbags with seperate fills or a extended shackel or block on one side of the truck the drivers side (it was like this when i bought it and still the same after the lift. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Try autoworld.com for motor mounts and alt,ac brackets. thats who i used for mine. yours looks likes goin good. let me know if you get ur cruise working when its done, still fighting mine. im using the zf5 spd from behind a 460 with no problems pulling a 28ft enclosed trailer.

DVolk, the problem I had with the FC mounts, is that the engine was 2. 5" inches from the firewall. With that much room between the engine and the firewall, there was NO WAY that the stock belt driven fan would clear the radiator. I am trying my best to make this install as factory looking as possible, and using as much of off the shelf stuff as I can. I called FC about this problem a couple of times and always got the "Well, so and so will have to talk to you, but he is blah, blah, blah". So in other words, for as much as the mounts cost, and as much trouble as they gave me, and no better than there customer service was to me, they are not worth it in my opinion.

As far as the chain driven transfer cases, I don't think you will have much trouble as long as you get a heavier built one, I. E. a NV 241 DHD, or a 271. There are many a pulling trucks using these. I am not going to say they are indestructible, but they should hold up just fine on a street truck, even making some decent power. Also as an advantage, they will give you a lower 4 LO ratio (like 2. 71:1) than the Np 205 or NP 203(2:1).

JQuam, Thanks for the tip, I think I am going to do a little re-arranging to fit my a/c and alt. As far as the cruise goes, I am hoping that it won't be too huge of an ordeal, I started with a 7. 3L IDI Turbo truck. I am trying to use as much of the ford wiring and control as possible. Do you have any pics of your install?-Nicholas

We had the exact problem with thier mounts and cust. service on my buddys 2002.

We gave up and built our own pretty similiar to yours.

I don't go out of my way to bash them, but I definitely tell what I think about them when someone ask me about them. The most aggravating part is I paid good money for them so that I could move things a little quicker, and I still had to take time to make my own. #@$%! O well, I will probably be happier with these in the long run anyhow. I will get off my soap box now. I am hoping I can dive into the more fun parts of the swap with the mounting done. On the plus side, I found out that my crossmember should work as-is. Oo.

DVolk, Sorry I forgot to answer you about the shackle flip. I added the shackle flip reverse to gain a better ride. With this kit, it will ride more like the leaf sprung Super Duty trucks, instead of being so choppy having to counteract the natural spring motion to flex. It also lifted the truck 2. 5", but I really wasn't after the height, but it will let me run a taller tire on a 19. 5" rim with rubbing though. -Nicholas
