Here's a pic of neighbor's month old new Jeep after being towed by his 35' HR diesel pusher motor home. The directions for unlocking the transfer case were not clear to him and this resulted. The Jeep was dragged for exactly . 6 miles (. 1 on gravel road + . 5 on asphalt). Note that the tread is totally worn thru to the casing. Both rear tires were trashed.

Lucky for him the local Les Schaub had a full set of new take-offs from a similar new Jeep and he picked them up for $100 each.

I've read of motorhome owners, particularly those who tow Jeeps, who have towed them until the front tires, wheels, front hubs, and the lower half of the front axle were ground away.

Many motorhome owners are somewhat less than mechanically inclined.

2nd hand report, I never saw vehicle

Heard of a Suzuki Samurai that served as a toad and the interior was loaded with "stuff". A robust tow vehicle brake application shifted the stowed load and bumped the gear shift stick into gear. Powertrain was then trying to start the engine for unknown length of time, think it did some pretty nasty damage before the owner found it.

The Jeep had the tires replaced the same day this happened. It's been driven for several days now with no problems surfacing. The tires were seconds away from catching on fire.

The funny thing is that the owner is very mechanically inclined (retired
refrigeration engineer). He is the strongest 83 year old guy I have ever met. Very sharp at that age, but I'm sure his age doesn't help!

I reserve any negitive comment, **** happens. Last year I backed out of my shop with my 04 3500 and camperINTO THE SIDE OF MY 01 3500 Dodge. And I thought I knew better. #@$%!

GCroyle:

Your story about the Sammy sounds identical to what happened to good friends of mine. Wife always drives anyway but he had a medical emergency and she drove 75MPH (or more) from the east coast (South Carolina?) nearly home to Arkansas before discovering it. The Sammy was totalled mechanically.

May be the same rig and incident.

If I remember correctly, to flat tow a samurai, you are supposed to put the t-case in neutral and the trans in 4th gear. Wouldn't take much to knock that t-case into gear.

with my 36' toyhauler, if I decide to travel with a small car, I'll just get a Smart car and put it in the garage. . mine is 12' long.
