I finally got the time to rebuild and install my original Dana 60 into my 92 W250. Drove it last night and this morning and there is no more death wobble. With this axle it was getting so bad that almost anytime I hit 45 MPH it would shake and shudder and now it is very smooth with just a slight shimmy that I think an alignment will take care of.
The kinpin bushings on both sides were in really bad condition. The teflon cap had actually worn the steel pin! The drive axle joints were so bad they just about fell apart in my hands.
The instructions for redoing the kingpin bushings are on www.pirate4x4.com. He has pictures and a pretty good description of how to do it. Parts I replaced:
kingpin bushing kit (includes seals, bearings, caps, kingpin, nuts/bolts, springs)
Dust seals
Inner bearing
axle joints
I got the bushing kit from a company in CO. Offroad design. All the other parts are from NAPA locally. The axle joints were the most expensive part at about $60 each. The bushing kits were about $50 each.
I bought a used D60 to install in the truck and will be rebuilding that one to sell it (It started doing the death wobble about 5000 miles ago). Anyone interested? I'll need to get around $1000 for it to cover the cost of the axle, parts, and beer :-laf .
