Took the "Dodge" and "4x4" decals off the back tailgate this am, but I can't get the stickum off from the decals. I tried rubbing it hard with Meguiar's paint cleaner, then resorted to some 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. The sandpaper works ok, but I'm worry about scratching up the paint. What do you guys recommend?

Try a product called Goo be Gone. It works great for removing sticky stuff. It is a citrus based product and will not hurt the paint. My wife buys it at craft stores or maybe Walmart. That and a little elbow grease goes a long way.

azcummins,

Lighter fluid works also, and if you wanna get fancy, your better autoparts stores carry an adhesive remover that works great.

I recently took off a bunch of stickers off my Jeep Wrangler. I used a hair dryer to heat up the sticker, then it peeled right off, and then i used some Goo Gone to remove the sticky left over residue. It's a piece of cake to do.

In the past i used cigarette lighter fluid to remove sticky residue. The Goo Gone stuff works better though.

Other than the Goo-Be Gone, the other stuff you guys are using (WD, Paint Thinner) aren't those really hard on your paint?

Lighter fluid, W-d, nope ,not a problem with paint, dunno 'bout paint thinner... ... ... ..... I don't think I'd be using it.

AZ,

When I did mine I had the same problem. It seemed that heat helped the most. Park it in the sun for awhile and then heat it up with a hair dryer. After I did that, the residue came off in big globs. It was PITA though.

The goo-gone should work also.

Don't forget to wash and wax it after you are done, as the cleaners will destroy the wax also.

If you don't get it by Memorial Day let me know. I'll see if I can help.

Scott

Hey Scott-

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to try some WD now as I've been waxing the truck all day and I want to be done.

I know I'll have it off by memorial day b/c I have to drive back to Colorado on Monday so by the way I drive... it will blow off!! :D

THAT'S IT!!!! Oo. Oo. Oo.

Park it in the sun to warm it up. Soak it with cleaner, then drive like a bat out of hell!!!!!!

That should do the trick!!!!!!:D :D :D

The 3M company makes a product that wil do the job beautifully and will not harm the finish.

3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner

This is great stuff, I have been using it for years in the boatyard.

az,

I took all the markings off the truck and used WD-40 along with a terry cloth towel... ... . I'll spare you guys my rant on sandpaper, razor blades and grinders..... lol We've been there before... ... .

Be careful with the spray on decal remover. Used it on my 82 Jeep and it took of the decal and any paint it touched too. Boy was I  .

Next time you need to remove the emblems, use some monifiliment fishing line between your hands and saw them off. won't leave much glue to remove.

don't laugh

Mark - what up?

don't laugh but i've used Peanut butter to take the crappy dealer sticker sticky stuff they slapped all over my truck. Works great. I sent ya a PM yesterday. drop me a line,

Within a week of buying mine, I removed the "Auge's Dodge" decal and the "Dodge" block letters from the tailgate. I went over to a small truck sign shop here in Albuquerque and had the young man make me a new Dodge in old-english script, first letter was 4" tall, all the others were 3 inches tall. Looks great. Then about 2 weeks ago, I put the chrome Cummins Power badge on the right side of the tailgate. Made it even better.

I'm looking for a Ram 2500 Cummins 24-Valve door badge to mount on the tailgate immediately below the chrome Cummins Power badge. If anyone has one in good condition, please let me know and how much.

Thanks bunches.

3M adhesive remover

The 3M adhesive remover works great. Dump on all you want, and it won't hurt the paint, but watch the trim as the remover will soften the adhesive.

Remove the residue on a warm day with the truck parked in the sun to warm it up. Don't use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat it up - it will discolor the paint. Bug and tar remover works great and only a small amount is needed (along with some elbow grease). Don't forget to clean the area after the residue is removed, especially if new decals are going where the old ones were.
