I’ve read that some Dodge dealers are recommending putting friction modifier in the trans to help with the gear clash/grind. I called the Dodge dealer I bought my truck from to ask if they recommended this. They said that 1) they do not recommend this, 2) that they are aware of the problem and that there is a mechanical “fix” which involves replacing a “cross shaft”, 3) there is not a TSB out on this yet, but there probably will be soon, 4) the cross shaft that needs to be replaced is not available yet, or is in limited supply, or they didn’t have them in stock, or something like that--forget exactly what he said, but he would definitely have to order it and he could not get it immediately.

Anyone else hearing this?

Well, it's better than "they all do that" or "we couldn't duplicate the problem"!

Puff, so far all the 6 speed trannys with a problem of any kind here locally are replaced without question. Mine had the third to fourth grind at 400 miles, dealer ordered new transmission and when it came in they gave me a new 6 speed to drive while mine was replaced, took the tech one day to get my truck back to me, and the new transmission is perfect... ... ... Pete

Pete: One explanation is that they no longer want to replace them and have found a fix that the Dodge techs can do--a somewhat disquieting thought. I’ll check back with them in a month—unless mine gets much worse—and see what they are saying then.

Bill: The “We can’t duplicate the problem” may still be coming, since they stated that they need to “verify” the problem before they can order the part for me. Since my gear clash happens primarily when the truck is cold, I imagine I’d have to leave it there overnight and tell the tech to drive it in the morning. This means I’m without a truck for 2 days just so they can “verify” the problem. Since my clash is not that bad, I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle right now. I’ll see how it progresses. If it gets worse, I’ll do it; if it gets better with break-in I may not bother. I’m not sure I want a Dodge tech tearing my trans apart unless it’s absolutely necessary—the saying “Don’t let a Dodge tech fix it unless it’s REALLY broken REALLY badly” comes to mind.

If it only does it when its cold doubt seriosuly they will try and fix it. Most Manual trannys do not perform there best when they are cold anyways. My . 002

The dealer put new synchros in my Ram at 20k. Then they fixed a leak at 24k,33k,46k. I think you get the point. An ASE certified NAPA shop is changing my clutch for a lot less!!
