Not flaming anyone here, but if JD hadn't of killed the old 2-cyl. engine when they did, IHC would still be alive & well and jd would be down & almost gone! Some of the worst days of my life were spent on a JD "R". deere's first diesel. And yes it was possible to blow head gaskets in 4010/4020's without blowers. Been there/done that. As far as the better engine in the 6 liter size IHC or deere made, the 358 CID IHC NUESS engine gets My vote. Yes rebuilds are more expensive, but more fuel efficient, lighter weight, or even the little 310 CID. Also, I thought the 4230 was nat. aspirated. 4430 was turbo charged, 4630 T/C & I/C. 4030 was a little 6-cyl. I used to work for a farmer that had everything from jd A's, G's, 60, 70, 520, 4020 G & D, 4320, 4230 and a really neat CASE 2470 4X4. He added an M&W turbo kit to the 4230.
