B6.7 Fuel Heater Recall

Satisfying...a freshly washed and cleaned truck.

Not flaming anyone here, but if JD hadn't of killed the old 2-cyl. engine when they did, IHC would still be alive & well and jd would be down & almost gone! Some of the worst days of my life were spent on a JD "R". deere's first diesel. And yes it was possible to blow head gaskets in 4010/4020's without blowers. Been there/done that. As far as the better engine in the 6 liter size IHC or deere made, the 358 CID IHC NUESS engine gets My vote. Yes rebuilds are more expensive, but more fuel efficient, lighter weight, or even the little 310 CID. Also, I thought the 4230 was nat. aspirated. 4430 was turbo charged, 4630 T/C & I/C. 4030 was a little 6-cyl. I used to work for a farmer that had everything from jd A's, G's, 60, 70, 520, 4020 G & D, 4320, 4230 and a really neat CASE 2470 4X4. He added an M&W turbo kit to the 4230.

DENNY... ... ... ... ... ... ... .

yes denny you are right the 4230 was naturally aspirated, do you know what the power was stock and what the power was after the turbo?? how would the power of a stock 4230 compare to a m&w turboed 4020?? also did the 4230 have a completly different engine than the 4020??

4230 was just the 4020 with the good Sound-Gard cab & the newer style transmission. I think the 4230 was rated about 90-95 PTO HP, and the turbo bumped it to 115-120 without pump work. The 4320 was still more powerful, at least The one He had would pull more! The 4320 became the 4430 finally. The 4230 displacement was still 404 I think, but the engine was almost a total new design from the 4010/4020 design. The tractor that really impressed Me was the 2470 CASE the guy had. Stock was 175 HP turned up to 225. SMOOTH ride! The 8440 Deere I used to run wasn't as strong. You better have the tach reading at least 1500 & climbing before the load gets to it or it will stall. If it's winding 2000 or so it would spin ALL 8 TIRES, and this tractor weighted almost 15 TONS :)

2470!!

I agree on the 2470 Case. The 504 powerplant is a fine engine. Lots of torque and longlife. The inline 6 engine has 3- 2 cylinder heads, quite unique. A good friend of mine had a 4890 Case which had a Scania I6 engine I am not sure of the cubic inch of it but there was LOTS of power there, and interesting sidenote to the large Scania engine was that it had a centrifical engine oil filter, no changing the filter just a drain and cleaning. If there was a weak point in the Case 4 wheel drive tractors it was the transmission. Operated properly they would go for years. Use a "junior" operator and the trans life could be mesured in days.

CUMMINS used that 3 banks of 2 cyl. in the 855 cid engines and even way before that. The old 165, 185, 220 & 250's were that way too I believe. I guess it was one way to increase "Part Commonality" with the 4-cyl. engines. I think that Scania engine in the 4870 was almost 900 CID. 350 HP I think. Engine was so tall Case had to put a bulge in the hood to clear the engine! I had a job placement at J. I. Case about the time that model came when I was in College.

Having grown up on Red & White tractors the Case transmission was easy to get used to. And I like the non-articulating design too. Having run all rear wheel drive tractors I used to really jerk the steering wheel. Every time I jerked the wheel the seat side cushion would smack Me in the side. First articulated tractor I drove almost put Me in the hospital with kidney trouble!

DENNY... ... ... ... ... ...

Splitting heads ache

Forgot about the old cummins 2 cylinder heads. I should have remembered vividly. When I lived in Wisconsin I used to run a limestone crusher in with a 190 hp Cummins. We had at least 2 trucks with the same engine in them. The solid frame of the Case tractors was much easier on the driver than the early articulating ones. If you ever want a really smooth field experiance try the large frame Cat Challenger. Steers like a sports car and rides like a baby buggy. :D

The John Deere 466/7.6 liter was a great engine. I have a 4440 w 11,000 hrs on and rebuilt the motor at 10,400 hrs. Hadn’t been touched since 1979 and only gave out because I got a little excited w the fuel screw while doing tillage

They were putting JD gen sets in some of the new Tug’s. At first everyone loved them. 50-60,000 hours later just replace them don’t bother rebuilding them. They don’t seem to hold up well after the overhaul. Not that we had much luck with the Cat’s on our Ferry’s after overhauls. I’m now working on a bunch of boats with old 16-71 Detroit’s they leak they are loud but they just keep runnng. I really want to repower with Cummins gen sets one day. Give them a shot an see how they hold up in the real world.

holy thread resurrection, from 2001!!! that might be a record here.

Ha.... I saw that, surprised because they locked down all/alot of the older threads.

But I just read the whole thing, I know nothing of JD except friend had and old 2Cyl B model, and about once a year we would get it running, was pretty hard by hand but eventually it always started, was much easier with a flat belt and the IHC H model if that was up and running.

Interesting, is that like a 4BT comparison?
It's newer & bigger then the 4bt but had a similar sound. The 4bt Cummins is a 3.9L. I think it would have been a mechanical inj engine but of course the latest versions are hpcr.
The owner had a dealership with Deere for gen-sets.

The cummins 3.9 4bt is the same displacement comparison to the John Deere 3.9 turbo in the 2140, 2750, 2755. My 2130 is a non turbo 239 cid 3.9l, similar to the non turbo 3.9 cummins.

the power tech is the 4.5 litre turbo compared to the cummins 4.5 turbo.

John Deere 359 non turbo and turbo tractors are similar displacement to the cummins 5.9 non turbo and turbo.

The biggest difference is all the Deere engines are wet sleeves while cummins is not until the 8.3.

The Ram 6.7 cummins is a touch smaller than the power tech 6.8.
