I was under the truck last Friday checking the clamps on the cat. I just happened to have a electrical tool that I knew would take care of the clamps, but I was wrong. Before you could say "cat", it fell off on the ground!!! I tried hard to get the cat and muffler back in place, but it would not stay. So I had to make some adjustments with some straight pipe!!!!!Our truck is so happy now!!!!!I made the cat a real nice resting place in the shed... .
Enough fun. . what a difference in the way the turbo spools up and how free the motor runs. About 2000 rpms it has a deep restinating sound. . My wife and kids really like the way it sounds. .

See that, and I accidentally had the same thing happen to me and I replaced it with a straight pipe too. Darn thing was all mangled from the long fall to the ground.

Similar thing happened to me this weekend. Only I think mine was demon possesion. My post in the 24 valve drivetrain is about a "howl" or "scream" under redline shifts. What is it?

The sound you're hearing is what has been held back by backpressure..... the sound of your turbo unloading. You should hear my HX40 through the 6" straightpipe when I shift. Drives dogs crazy and makes little girls cry. (It just sounded good, does drive dogs crazy)

I don't honestly know about the 12 valvers, but I bought a 5 foot piece of 3" pipe from NAPA for about $20. 00 and drove down the road to Meineke Muffler. I slipped the guy $5. 00 and he belled both ends of the pipe for me. A good sawzall blade, a die grinder (to remove remnants of the old exhaust, and a 1/2 hour later, you ready to wake up the neighborhood.
